"Unusual Heat" offspring

Steve,

The other day on the show you mentioned how the offspring of Unusual Heat were doing really well at Del Mar. Can you give us a list of which horses you were referring to? Any other distinguishing factors in the breeding?

Looking forward to Lauren Stich's next visit, maybe this will come up?

Joe

I think Barry Abrams runs every horse from Unusual Heat...ever.

Lethal Heat is entered on Sunday. She just ran against Zenyatta last weekend!!! I guess I shouldn't be surprised though.

Unusual Heat has come up the hard way as a stallion; his fee was initially free or thereabouts and he had fewer than 20 foals in each of his first few crops. But 8 of 14 foals (13 starters) in his first crop earned over $100K apiece, the SWs started coming, and he began to get more good mares. The Unusual Heats are rugged sorts in general, able to stand multiple years of racing, the heritage of his Danish-bred dam (a champion and Derby winner, then a G1 winner in the US). Now that he gets bigger crops of these horses who stick around for years, there tend to be a lot of them out there running and winning, particularly in SoCal.

When I used to play SoCal and there was a Cal-bred race on the grass, I'd just use the Unusual Heats and Bertrandos and move on.
