What I want to know is how they can regulate this?

Because oxygen is a drug. Trainers are attempting to increase the oxygen carried within the plasma on race day.

Because they have the right to regulate anything racehorses get prior to entry in a race in their jurisdiction, if they desire, including electromagnetic therapy, magic LED red lights in expensive blankets, acupuncture, herbs, extracorporeal shockwave therapies, etc.

BTW, the Veterinary Hyperbaric Medicine Society (http://www.vet.utk.edu/vhms/review.html has a good summary of hyperbaric medicine in the equine) encourages stronger regulation of veterinary hyperbaric medicine, just as the human side has regulated dive medicine and medical hyperbaric chamber use over the years.

Right now veterinary hyperbaric medicine in the hands of lay people, for the most part.

I think there are quite a few chambers in use in California.

They can't by any means other than simply catching them in the act. Though you know the investigators will be all over them.

I think his question was more HOW are they going to enforce not why they would.

there are a few... HRTV did a documentary on them (saw it on a Sat or Sun morning a few weeks ago).

But yeah, unless this board plans on putting someone onsite at this place, this is all pr, and there is probably somewhere within 75 miles that has a chamber on a farm as it is....

The issue will be with moving horses back and forth off the track every day. If every day the same horse leaves for a couple hours...
And being that they just discovered this "new" therapy I'm sure they will all over this place.

100% oxygen (not room air, which is 21% oxygen) is a drug just like propofol or codeine or an antibiotic. I can easily kill you with 100% oxygen ;) You are supposed to have a medical license to be able to purchase it and dispense it. Which isn't always true, indeed.

Unlike NYRA, I'd be more worried about someone blowing out a bleb in a bleeder's lungs, or causing severe pain in an undiagnosed tooth abcess, or hurting a horse with an impacted gutteral pouch or a sinus infection, rather than if a horse had a hyperbaric treatment on race day.

Apparently nobody has shown the NYRA an oxyhemoglobin dissociation curve, regarding the duration of effect of increased plasma oxygenation?

Which is why it should be allowed on track. The real issues are safety (for the horse and others not involved) and which favored contractor gets the gig.

Which wont happen because the tracks arent going to take the risk, especially for little gain.

The operator might have a fallback if NYRA allows stuff like privately operated underwater treadmills on track grounds. Do they allow anything?

What have I been doing drinking coffee....I just need better oxygen! :D
