I should say "new" because it's not like this is the first time they've tried to get this going. There's a renewed attempt to get the Conyers-Burton Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act through Congress (it didn't make it to the floor in time last year). Given that the House sub-committee is chaired by Rep. Conyers, I'd say it'll make it to the floor. Time to call, email, etc. your Representative if you'd like to see it passed. They might even decide to co-sponsor it which increases its chances.

Unfortunately, in general, I doubt the congress is very concerned about this.

The market for horses is down...way down. However, breeders are still breeding. The economy works on supply and demand. If the supply outweighs the demand, you are going to have foals that sell for $25 and adults who sell for $100. Whose fault is that? It's the breeders fault. You're blaming everything on something that only you have control....over-breeding your horses. Stop breeding them! Stopping the slaughter of horses has nothing, whatsoever, to do with the prices being so low. It's the glut of horses that makes the prices so low. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that one out! STOP BREEDING! If people aren't buying, or paying a good price for what you produce, why on earth do you still produce it? If the market is no there, then it's just not there!

There is no correlation between banning the slaughter of an animal we do not consider a food animal or livestock, with any change in the processing of animals traditionally raised for food which we do eat ...

Banning horse slaughter is not the exclusive domain of the vegetarians.

ANY slaughter, however, should meet humane criteria if we regard ourselves as humans...
