Do you have betting loyalty?

I thought of this when I read GPK say that he was betting EC in the Million no matter what the odds were. Although this might not make sense financially, it obviously makes sense for him because he is a huge fan of the horse, so he certainly isn't going to bet against his boy!! I assume Buffy won't be betting against Perfect Drift anytime soon either.

So that brings up the question about betting loyalty. How loyal are you guys? Does loyalty only matter for G1 type horses like EC and PD, or do you guys have $10,000 claimers that you would bet every time because you are a fan, or just because they have been good to you in the past? If EC was in a race against Deep Impact and Hurricane Run, should GPK still bet him to win? What do you guys think?

None

In betting there is no loyalty, RULE #1 NEVER bet woth your heart, just like in sports wagering.

I would never bet against Butterface. Never. Shes as game as they come. hard knocker, game old campaigner.

He is the ONLY horse I do that for only because he hasn't faced the likes of Deep Impact and Hurricane Run. Im smart enough to realize when I think he can and can not win. The Arlington Million, not a doubt in my mind he is capable of winning that race, and that is the only reason I bet him. If he was in a race against the likes of DI or HR, I would maybe put a very small wager on him, but not the normal $100 bet that I normally place on him.

Loyalty is a funny thing... Some people only bet grey horses, some people only bet "certain name"" horses, and some stay loyal to a horse. Its fun to follow a certain horse, and doesnt it seem that when you give up betting him or her the horse will win ? I remember my brother -in-law.. bet DaHoss in his first BC win..and the next year doesnt play him...(reason.. NO races between the BC's ) ...so what happens... You know WHO won...LOL
If you like a horse forget the odds and just play.. I wonder How many played Cigar , when he kept winning each race ? How many said... Ohhh he cant win 5 in a row, 6 in a row.....ect ? Sometimes we put too much information in the brain and tell ourselfs that the horse Cant win, when we should just throw a few bucks down and enjoy the race !

I have a tough time separating one from the other. For instance, if I see Longfield Spud running at Charles Town, you can bet your heinie I'll be throwing some coin at him.

Buffymommy 08-10-2006 09:11 AM

You are correct! I will bet Drifty in any race because 99% of the time he is going to show up! He may not win, but that is what WPS bets are for!

I admit, I am guilty as sin for betting with my heart sometimes. But that is who I am. I can't change myself. Loyalty is a good thing, but not always in racing and handicapping. But like I said, I can't change who I am.

Balletto 08-10-2006 09:13 AM

I dont know if its "loyalty" but I always put something on certain sires in a race, especially maidens. For instance, Capote or Sillver Deputy fillies. If there's a Capote or Silver Deputy filly in a race 8 furlongs or shorter and the filly has shown ANY type of class, I will put 2 bucks on her. Just learned that those two stallions often have great prices on the board with daughters who seems to win at a great clip in maiden races. So, maybe a "learned loyalty".

dellinger63 08-10-2006 09:19 AM

I will play Major Rhythm small in the Million as a friend owns the horse. Not sure if I'm loyal to the horse or the owner but the $70 some dollars he payed to win in the Stars and Stripes will keep me going for a while with future bets on him.

slotdirt 08-10-2006 09:19 AM

Oh, I'll bet Pleasant Colonies as well, but they're few and far between these days.

I agree with this completely. I'll bet my favorites no matter what. But if the race is tough....I'll get real conservative.

boldruler 08-10-2006 10:01 AM

Always bet on Tagg on the grass. Easy money.

2Hot4TV 08-10-2006 10:13 AM

If I own them, I bet them no matter what. We had a first time starter at the fairgrounds that the trainer said our horse could swim for miles ,but she couldn't run very fast. She payed $17.20 wire to wire. You should of seen the look on his face.

jpops757 08-10-2006 10:14 AM

Unraced Maidens I will always put a small bet on a Gulch or Hadif baby.

BellamyRd. 08-10-2006 10:42 AM

9 times out of 10
I'll bet on a KY bred horse

freezy 08-10-2006 10:43 AM

Angles not loyalty

seems to be what i'm hearing minus, GPK's love affection to EC.

Cajungator26 08-10-2006 11:42 AM

I'm loyal...

I always bet Silverfoot, The White Fox and Nolan's Cat. LOL

slotdirt 08-10-2006 11:52 AM

I always seem to get suckered into betting Sacred Light. Oh, and I'm definitely a sucker for Funny Cide. That's the worst kind of sucker bet.

Scurlogue Champ 08-10-2006 12:01 PM

I always do, and that has caused some problems for me.

Loyalty

Growing up at The Big T I once bet on a 60/1 shot Powerdette who finished last. I decided that day I would bet $2 on that horse everytime it ran thinking one day it would wake up and win at tremendous odds. This carried on for two years. Each time the odds seam to get larger and the results never changed.

Then one day I picked up the Cleveland Plain Dealer and read where a horse has electocuted itself on the walking ring...yep it was Powerdette.

The moral of the story is you will be more loyal than the horse.

I do bet Roberto firsters though with some really good success, especialy on the grass.
