Euroears

I remember a comeback race at FG that was unproductive in the winter. Is he still in training? Was a very promising 5-7 f runner lasts year before injury.

There was an article in the DRF earlier this week. He just breezed. The owner currently has him under his care and is hoping to send him to California.

Before his injury Ifelt he was ready to chalange the top sprinters. Thanks for the info.

received this last week and thought was a case of mistaken identity (Equibase had been having glitches) - if remembering correctly, he had a screw inserted and an infection developed in that area when they tried to bring him back last time - didn't see the article, so glad to hear they're giving it another shot - thanks!

yes - found the article under the Arlington column - apparently training with the owners at Ruidoso (believe read a long time ago they breed quarterhorses) - so the surgery was to replace two screws with one, guess can understand them wanting to try but just dunno if he'll ever be quite the same, wish him well and them lots of luck with it though ..

The immensely gifted Euroears is on the way back from his second leg surgery, but trainer Bret Calhoun said he's uncertain whether Euroears will be rejoining one of his strings of horses.

Euroears posted a three-furlong breeze in 38.20 seconds on June 4 at Ruidoso Downs in New Mexico, his first work since undergoing surgery late last year. An operation was performed on Euroears's right hind leg to remove two screws (and replace them with one new screw) that had been inserted to stabilize a fracture sustained in March 2008.

Euroears was the rage of the 2007-2008 Fair Grounds meet. He won three stakes that season, two on dirt and another on turf, to run his career record to 6 for 6 before suffering the original injury. Euroears finished fifth last November in his first and only start following his first layoff.

Calhoun said Jim Helzer, who owns Euroears with his wife, Marilyn, has a barn at Ruidoso, and is training Euroears there himself. Calhoun said Helzer had talked about racing Euroears in Southern California this year.

"I don't know if I'm getting him back or not," said Calhoun......

from DRF.com:

Euroears back on work tab

Euroears, off since his impressive return in the Thanksgiving Day Handicap, is back in training at Fair Grounds, working a half-mile in 49.40 seconds on Saturday.

"Everything went just like we wanted," trainer Bret Calhoun said. "He went the half-mile and did it easy."

One of the stars of the 2008 stakes series at Fair Grounds and still a perfect 5 for 5 over the Fair Grounds main track, Euroears had a difficult time away from Fair Grounds as he recovered from a leg fracture.

After a couple of clunkers last fall, Euroears ran back to his old form in the Thanksgiving Handicap at Fair Grounds, winning by 1 1/2 lengths.

That race was encouraging enough that Euroears was under consideration for Saturday's Mr. Prospector Stakes at Gulfstream Park, but his connections decided to save him for other targets.

"We just backed off him a little bit," Calhoun said. "It's early in the year for him, and there are lot of races for him later in the spring."

Calhoun said that Euroears was still under consideration for the Gaudin here on Jan. 23 and was possible for the Colonel Power here on Feb. 20.

Baffert has two runners in Saturday’s $150,000 Palos Verdes Handicap – Euroears and Ventana. Euroears, previously trained by Bret Calhoun, has won four stakes at Fair Grounds and is seeking his first graded stakes win in the Grade 2 Palos Verdes over six furlongs.

thank you so much for resurrecting this thread - started receiving workouts last month for Euroears from Fairplex :zz: and couldn't in my wildest imagination figure out who had him, well now we know, should be interesting and best of luck to him, win or lose he's always a hard trier ...

I wish. If it was anyone other than Baffert with those bullet works, I probably would've tossed a few scruples down.

Those are some splits.

Redboard: I was going to comment about how great he looked on the track right before the race but I held back. His coat was probably the most shiney I have ever seen, ever. Almost reflected like a mirror when the sun was on him.
