ESPN & Belmont Day: Come for Kenny, stay for honest to God racing

http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-raci...lmont-coverage

5 whole hours after nada on Preakness Day. I was promised Kenny Mayne per the press release, and since I doubt they can go that long without showing an undercard race, this should be good times. (ETA: Comparatively, I mean no coverage vs. typical coverage. I do want to be more specific on that point given our past discussions. Kenny makes me feel like a little bit of the show Sports Night from the late 90s is come to life for a few moments and that makes me happy so I'll go right on enjoying him.)

Here hoping Mayne does at least 2 of his typical quirky/crazy spots for the Belmont like he normally does for the weekend sportscenters.

hard to believe musberger isn't taking over at 5pm on abc. thank god he's not!

Monarchos1 06-02-2009 09:26 PM

Good Lord. I just read that they will have 38 cameras for their coverage. I will place the over/under on the number of camera cuts during the race at 18.

chucklestheclown 06-02-2009 09:39 PM

Joe Tessitore will host the programming with analysts Jerry Bailey and Randy Moss, reporters Jeannine Edwards, Rece Davis, Jay Privman, Steve Cyphers, Tom Rinaldi, and Caton Bredar, and handicappers Kenny Mayne and Hank Goldberg. Rick Reilly will provide commentaries.ABC Sports will use 38 cameras to cover the race, including a super slo-mo camera and a helicopter camera.Features on The Belmont telecast on ABC and ESPN will include: Calvin Borel on life after the Derby; Chip Woolley on training Mine That Bird; Kenny Mayne on riding with Woolley from his home in New Mexico to Belmont Park; Trainer Nick Zito on his love for the Belmont; and what makes a longshot.

I can't stand Tessitore (if he posts here, sorry). I'm glad they are not calling Randy Moss a handicapper and look forward to the Mayne/Woolley stuff:D .

wow, from nothing to everything.

they basically have the entire under card, what did they show for the 2 previous triple crown races? the race before (i don't know b/c i was there)? i think its awesome idea, but at the same time don't think it means horse racing more mainstream. What other sports are really playing saturday? but something is better then nothing

i imagine i'll be sick of kenny mayne about 30 min into the show and go for the mute button. side note, what are the adw's gonna do with their video feeds? i know sometimes on big days when they broadcast the undercards places like youbet and twinspires blackout the video feed

I watch NYRA on TwinSpires.com every day they run in NY.

You guys are a tough crowd. I really like Kenny Mayne's dry humor and think it really adds a lot to a typical horse racing broadcast. It's certainly better than hearing Hank Goldberg bumble through some analysis before talking about how he's taking a chalkeating 4 horse exacta box.

As for Bailey and Moss. Whatever you think of them, they know their stuff. Moss worked on the Beyer team making figures forever, so saying he isn't a competent handicapper is nonsense.

So is it just me, or do they not show NYRA if you have a NY address?

if by that you mean his awful comments about people wagering real money and being johnny obvious about everything with a weird comment at the end, if thats your cup of tea, have at it.

dare i say i would rather have mike watchmaker on the air before kenny mayne. Or you, i would rather have you on the air dave then listen to that f'n guy say N-VAS-OOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRR one more time

That's the reason. Can't get NYRA or Finger Lakes if you have a NY address.

You've already read the script. No fair! Kenny can be quite entertaining however.;)

I respected Moss til his pace figure schilling. Dam, Koko Taylor died today. RIP.

There really needs to be an apologee for lack of leadersip from the NYRA. Horse racing needs a lot more than what they have offered. Their status quo is lacking to put it lightly. As Mr Post in his his insightful article in tbred times stated, integrity .

They do a nice job over all so I apologize for sounding too harsh .

Glad to see the races on HD this weekend

Kenny Mayne, for my taste, is one of the better talents on ESPN.

The networks really dropped the ball this year. The public was really captivated by the whole Rachel - Mine That Bird scene. They were ready for some extra racing action after the Derby.

I think this year's Belmont viewership will be better than last but will fall short of the Preakness increased ratings.

I hope I'm wrong.

It will be great though to see so many races in HD on ESPN and ABC. I hope we might even get to pick up on some horse body language. But we may see a little too much of the talking heads and not enough of the real stars.

Really looking forward to the race.

Can't you just watch it on the OTB channel?

Not on youbet for me either. I think nyra doesn't allow it for NY residents.
