Smooth Air taken from Stutts

Mount Joy Stables owner Brian Burns has moved Smooth Air from trainer Bennie Stutts into the barn off Chad Brown. Stutts helmed the Smooth Jazz 4 year old to three Gr. II wins and earnings of more than $1,000,000 in 15 starts including the placement in Monday's Gr. I Metropolitan Handicap.

Could this be just for a focus on the NY races and Stutts isn't locally based in NY?

Sightseek 05-26-2009 12:41 PM

That is unfortunate.

jwkniska 05-26-2009 12:45 PM

Unfortunately, figures that Stutts said in a phone interview on HRTV earlier in the day that no matter what, he wasn't worried that the owners would take the horse away from him.

He's a former Frankel assistant who trained Maram to her BC win last year. I think someone on this board has some horses with him.

He's definitely a good trainer and has already earned the right to have a big name horse in his barn. However, the circumstances with which he's getting that horse could be better.

No worries, especially considering she hasn't come back this year. She won the BC Juv Fillies Turf on Friday of BC weekend.

It was also the same day as Chad Brown's grandfather's funeral. It happened to also be Jose Lezcano's 1st BC win in his 1st try.

So did Consequence.

Dick Powell 05-26-2009 06:19 PM

That's really sad. I remember in last year's Derby, he was interviewed in the paddock and all he could talk about was how Allen Jerkens called him to wish him luck and how much that meant to him.

Hickory Hill Hoff 05-26-2009 07:48 PM

Chad Brown grew up in Mechanicville NY about 15 mins from Saratoga.....

also, welcome aboard Dick Powell !

Scurlogue Champ 05-26-2009 08:39 PM

Good for Chad Brown. Hopefully he'll do well with him

chucklestheclown 05-26-2009 11:58 PM
