If he's anything like his mom, he's already past his prime.

Do you think Shug would have named Fuentes if he felt this horse could run....or was ready to run?

NTamm1215 05-21-2009 08:24 PM

Combined number of Shug McGaughey wins with firsters in NY on the dirt over the last three years and Raymundo Fuentes wins at this meet...

Bonus points if you can name that one.

Would have to be Smuggler. Came right to my mind.

Good guess, but that was more than 3 years ago. This one was last year at the Spa.

Banker's Buy....Gotham day at Aqueduct.

How could I forget.....I bet the second finisher at 15:1.

I was thinking of Persistently, who won at 4-1 at Saratoga. Maybe my memory has gone bad. If someone with Formulator can confirm she won first out?

She didn't...she ran 3rd at 25-1 in her debut and then came back to win a couple of weeks later.

He also won with a turf horse called Tourism but Banker's Buy is the real answer.

She closed to finish 3rd against Nick Zito trained Miss Ocean City in race 6 on July 27,2008.

He's won with three turf firsters in NY, all last year, but only the one on the dirt.

Cool, thanks. I remember that Miss Ocean City race, too. She turned out to be very disappointing after an excellent debut.

Miss Ocean City is the only Mineshaft I recall winning first out, ever. I'm sure there are others, but I've not seen 'em. She's turn out to be a dud. Leon Blusewicz (sp?) has her now. She was up the track in a small stake in the last week or two.

I thought she scratched.

There have been a total of three debut winners for Mineshaft in three years. In addition to Miss Ocean City there have been two at Woodbine, Shafted last year and Miner's Claim in 2007.

Mineshaft's top earner thus far- the one and only Casino Drive.

It may have been a few weeks ago, I'll have to see if I can find it. Possibly in MD...

Casino Drive won his debut...

I know there's some railing on Shug in here but Storm Flag Flying was a nutcase when she came into the paddock at Saratoga. She was flipping-out, freaking-out etc. Her mother had a similar disposition. Shug was able to work through these issues and still get them to run, which is not easy to do.

My first BC in person was '95 when My Flag nailed Cara Rafaela on the wire, who of course went on to foal Bernardini. Lukas was blanked in that race despite having three starters and the favorite.
