This explains a lot. Jess hasn't been drinking his own Kool-Aid. He just sniffed the gasoline fumes, looked up at the Mobil sign, and had some sort of 'eureka!' moment. Fortunately for everyone it didn't end up with him running naked down the street a la Archimedes.
