If I owned a Kentucky Derby winner

providing it was a suitable type, I would aim it at the Epsom Derby.

1. You dont have to rush the horse back in 2 weeks for the Preakness, the horse would get about 6 weeks rest.

2. Instead of trying to become the 12th Triple Crown winner in history, the horse would be trying to become the first Kentucky / Epsom Derby winner.

3. I'm sure it would have worldwide coverage and be good news for the sport.

Or would I eventually be pressurised into running it in the Preakness??

Wasn't "the media" suggesting something along these lines for Barbaro... maybe it was "Triple Crown" then 'Arc...

Who let these foreigners and their crazy ideas in our country?

:p

Well, lets see.

Does the triple crown still offer that 5 mil bonus. Or is that 5 mil total after purses and bonus?

Don't forget the enormous hype going into stud duty a triple crown winner would receive.

ezgoerbaby 05-05-2009 01:21 PM

That 5 million bonus left with Chrysler I believe.

Scav 05-05-2009 01:56 PM

He has to be feeling the 8 hour flight right now to come up with something so insane.... ;)

Would take an incredibly turfy horse for anyone to ever consider it. You'd be the heavy favorite to take down a $1 million race and then have the spotlight on you going for the first Triple Crown in over 30 years. To possibly give that up you'd have to feel like you were 1/5 to win the Epsom Derby and I can't see anyone ever liking their horse's chances that well overseas on the turf.

What about the reverse, a UK horse coming here for the Kentucky Derby before returning to Epsom?

Dr. Devious ran OK to finish 8th in the '92 Kentucky Derby (beating out fellow Euro Arazi coincidentally) before heading back to England to upset St. Jovite.

Maybe it was the flight for this crazy talk (as I was thinking this on the way home) but I was seeing if there was any way you could skip the Preakness with an injury free horse..The Derby double would be a great acheivement but a better feat would be to win the Kentucky Derby and then the Arc as it is THE race everyone in Europe wants to win. So that way you could still attempt the US triple crown, give the horse a well deserved rest, then ship to Europe, make sure to get in a prep race, ideally the Prix Niel, but I would like to prep in a G1 race rather than a G2. I would probably send the horse to Leopardstown for the Irish Champion Stakes or if I was feeling very adventureous, the St Leger, then the Arc.

Yeah, it seems that the Epsom Derby is really not a big deal here but the Arc is a huge deal. Maybe just cause one produces more horses for the BC so we are more familiar with it.

if the horse wins the triple crown... no way he goes to the Arc because he will be LONG retired by then..

Well yeah, once a horse wins the Derby, they nearly always try to win at 10f to prove that the horse isnt "slow". And we did go through a stage of about 5 Derby winners when they never won a race after Epsom. There is no ducking in the Arc, its the richest race on Turf, the best of the best show up (I think the record margin of victory is only 6L in it).

Bad news for Mine That Bird is I believe the Arc (and Epsom Derby) are for Colts and Fillies only - NO GELDINGS!!!

That would be really funny, if a Derby winner wanted to run in the Arc and was denied.
