Magna 5 now a $1 minimum

In 2009 the Magna Five now is a $1 minimum wager! That means for just a buck you can take a shot at a nice payoff. Of course, since most players will submit multiple tickets, a $1 minimum means you can cover many more horses each Saturday.

I know I will be playing it now. Unless the LRL and GG races are impossible.

I love this bet

I'll give this a look now. I definitely prefer the $1 minimum multi-race bets.

this is great news. I was just getting curious as to whether they would have it again this year.
Any news on when it starts?
Is it Sunshine Millions weekend, or the weekend after?

Will be interesting to see if the $1 base lures enough new interest and expanded wagers from existing devotees to offset the 'price cut'. While not entirely the same thing, we have seen how the advent of the Dime Super has substantially impacted the payouts there. I'll assume going in that the Magna 5 won't carry over as often during this season or pay nearly as big as it has historically. And we'll see if Magna is going to guarantee this year as well... I'm not against it going to $1, but the reasoning in doing so affects the wager's dynamics more than they are speculating.

I think it going to a $1 base is great for people who otherwise would not have played because the $2 base didn't fit their ticket budgets, and I'm all for expansion to include new players...BUT, as someone who has played this with a $2 base and failed to hit it, I'm kind of miffed because now I'll have to have the dilemma when I play of going for $1 or $2 in bases...do I keep my $2 to "double" my winnings because the take down is less with more $1 base bets included? Something I'll need to think about.

I've chased this bet the last few years, and hit 4 of 5 more times than I care to remember. The $500 guarantee was nice, but even if its not guaranteed, the $1 minimum will still draw a lot of interest. I think the fact that it all happens within 1 hour at 3 or 4 different tracks is the most fun part about it.

But I agree, the payoffs may not be nearly as big, but I think the handle may even increase with more bettors getting interested in it, especially when it includes major stakes at Santa anita and Gulfstream.
