St. Leger - Top Lock?
Hi guys......
I'm trying to keep tabs on all Nayef offspring, so I was disappointed to hear that Top Lock had finished 2nd yet again in a group stakes. Was it a good race for him, enough to send him on to the St. Leger as a contender? I'd love to see him win one of these one day..... Also, have there been any promising Nayef 2 year olds to keep an eye on? It seems like he might have a decent colt in Nafaath, who's running at Cork tomorrow, but haven't heard of anyone else. I'd love to see Nayef solidify his very good first crop with some promising babies...... Lastly - does Lady Marian have a shot in the Prix de la Nonette tomorrow? She seems like she's really coming into her own, though I'm sure she'll be meeting better than she has been. Thanks so much! |
I only really saw the race in passing, but the winner looked like he just pulled more and more out and Top Lock, though he looked very threatening 2f out, just ran out of a bit of steam.. He is still in the Leger with a decent shout - it looks to be very open this year, but I think Michael Stoute will get his elusive first Leger win with Conduit..
Nafaath was just beaten this afternoon in Cork. He came third beaten two heads.. It could have been a decent enough maiden (as an aside, the Irish juveniles are sensational this year - Arazan was unreal yesterday and Bushranger who wouldnt be the best Irish juvi here won the G1 in france today!) and Lady Marian won , I have a soft spot for German Breds so delighted she won.. |
Thanks, Brockguy!
I was disappointed to hear that Nafaath lost, but he seems like a decent sort anyway. Did you see Lady Marian's race? I was so excited that she won this morning, but then I heard that the favorite encountered some trouble and might have won without it. I hope that's not the case here, but even so......Lady Marian is definitely improving. She's an interesting filly to follow the remainder of this year and into next. Top Lock will run next year, so I'm just going to hope that he continues to run well. Eventually he'll win a stakes and I certainly can't complain with his efforts. He always gives it a good try. |
Stupid question but I'm not awake yet... was Top Lock in the German Derby?
I know I've heard the name but not sure where. Glad to hear your girl won today, Betsy. :tro: |
yeah i think he was 3rd in it.
Lady Marian was 2nd in the German Oaks as well! |
Thanks, Brock.

Thanks, My Miss Storm Cat! I am thoroughly enjoying following Nayef's offspring. I've always liked European racing, but I've only occasionally had a favorite horse do well. I had completely forgotten about Nayef, to be honest, and I'm rather ashamed as I just adored him as a racehorse. I'm so happy that he's gotten off to such a good start at stud. The QEII looks to be a corker of a race if HenrytheNavigator goes, with Tamayuz and Ravens Pass..... Just one more question - hope you don't mind! Have you heard anything about Spacious? I heard she was pointing for a fall campaign.......I'm hoping she's improved since the Coronation. That was disappointing for me, but since the winner has gone on to take the Yorkshire Oaks, it can't have been too bad a race for her. Thanks! |
I don't really follow her (too busy checking on my Hong Kong boys and assorted third-rate types :D ) but looked around a little and found this.....

Ooh - thanks for posting that! I'll be on vacation and away from the computer, but if Spacious runs, I will be crossing my fingers!

It's been a tough year for many trainers this year who you would usually expect to have a few decent winners. James Fanshawe, John Dunlop and Barry Hills have all had dreadful seasons by their usual high standard. |
I read on the Racing Post website that Fanshawe has replaced Jaime Spencer on Spacious with Robert Winston. I'm not familiar with Winston - is he a good choice for Spacious?
Thanks! |
Another piece incase you're interested...
http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/r...ut-910583.html I can't really answer your question... I just have a soft-spot for the jockeys who have troubles (alcoholism) and who are banned for long periods of time (I won't get into the fairness / unfairness of it, but he did serve a very long suspension). I think he'll do just fine. :) |
There are many jockeys Id pick ahead of Spencer - Winston isnt one of them though....
|
Powerscourt / Antonius Pius flashbacks aside, I agree.
Winston is perfectly competent though... isn't he? I think so anyway. He's been through a lot. I just feel sorry for him. |
Thanks for the article, Miss Storm Cat! I don't know much about Winston - I'm just hoping Spacious comes back to her old form.
Full Toss won today and pretty easily, too. I don't know how good of a race that was, but he's certainly got a good pedigree and he's owned by the Queen! |
:)

Spacious set for Friday comeback Racing Post staff SPACIOUS, runner-up in the 1,000 Guineas earlier this year, makes her long-awaited return in Friday's Frank Whittle Partnership Conditions Stakes at Doncaster. The James Fanshawe-trained filly won the May Hill at the St Leger meeting last year before just going down by half a length to Natagora in the NewmarketClassic. Spacious then went on to finish fourth in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot but the daughter of Nayef has been off the track since that run in June as connections gave her time to get over her early-season exertions. She is reportedlyfiring again now and will have a new partner as Robert Winston takes over from Jamie Spencer in the one-mile heat. "She's in good form and has been pleasing us in her work, but she has been off a while now," said Chris Richardson, managing director of owners the Cheveley Park Stud. "She's telling us she's ready to go again now and we're looking forward to it. "It will be interesting to see how she acts on the ground at Doncaster." Spacious will be having just the fifth run of her career and Richardson is hoping she will be able to tackle next month's Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket before gearing up for a four-year-old campaign. "The Sun Chariot is an option for her if all goes well on Friday, and that could be her last run before we put her away for the year," he added. "She's certainly got the form, but we just gave her a break as she had been on the go for a long time prepping for the Guineas. "She's a strong-framed filly and she continues to mature and develop as she gets older so hopefully there is more to come next year." Spacious faces just four rivals on Town Moor, Godolphin's Alexandros, Fanjura, Moyenne Corniche and Alexander Castle, who has been off the track since his run in the French 2000 Guineas in May. |
Thanks for posting, MMSC! I'm crossing my fingers that Spacious does well.
Anyone know what the odds are of Tamayuz being pointed for the BC Mile? I read that Freddie Head is pointing Goldlika (sorry, I'm sure I've spelled her name wrong) to the Mile and that would be a great disappointment to me. Thanks! Does he look to still be in good form in advance of the QEII? |
Goldikova has a few options as well, she could point to the mile or the filly and mare turf so its still quite open. I heard she may even go for the 7f G1 the day before the Arc. Tamayuz has the QEII as his next race and the BC Mile would seem like the logical place to send him if they wanted to race him once more this year,.. He is currently 2nd fav at 5-1 for the Mile with bookies over here..
