Curlin to the Woodward

Guess the turf experiment is over.

EDIT: Not totally over for sure, just for now....

Yea!

Gander 08-05-2008 12:23 PM

I know it was only 1 race but I never thought he looked comfortable on the turf. If he were mine I would stay on dirt, and maybe try the synthetic given the purse and the chance at a rare BC Classic repeat, who knows maybe 3 peat? I mean, who would he have to beat on the synthetics, Student Council? Big Booster? McCanns Mojave? I would do the same thing as last year with the Jockey Cub then the Classic, but running in the Woodward makes sense too. And we get to see him here in Saratoga. Good plan!

Here it is, IEAH, money where your mouth is. 27 days off should be plenty of time since you were at least considering the Travers in 20 days. They'll never do it, but the opportunity is there.

Gander 08-05-2008 01:20 PM

How big a crowd would we get here if this matchup were to take place in the Woodward? :{>:
Thinking 75K easy.

kgar311 08-05-2008 01:26 PM

The horse has already been bought and paid for, they have their money. Give the fans what they want to see. Spineless gutless bastards these owners are.

it would be HUGE.

but now ieah wants a turf race for big brown, so it probably won't happen.

Coach Pants 08-05-2008 01:29 PM

It would be the sports media NON-EVENT of the year. Maybe they can start a new channel called WHO GIVES A S*IT and show it live.

Big Brown vs Curlin a non-event? or are we talking about something else.

Depends if Nick Zito can upset the apple cart, again.

And only on September 13. Convenient dodge, eh?

It's not like these two horses are anything near the all-time greats of the sport. Compound that with the fact that both trainers of said horses are shining examples of what is wrong with the sport, and a horrendous betting race and you have a non-event.

Why anyone would care about an overrated matchup is beyond me. I'd rather have both connections fall off the face of the earth.

With Dutrow running his mouth again, it reminds me of one of my favorite movie lines (Doyle Lonnegan to Henry Gondorff in The Sting): "Not only are you a cheat, you're a gutless cheat as well."

He did not look comfortable.
But he came in 2nd to the BC Turf champ.

They probably have seen enough but I have not.
Curlin is too good on dirt for anyone. Its boring.

interesting that they may go to the japan cup. i just think they're really dead-set against running on the AWT in california. and a slim chance he could run next year, altho jackson says he wants curlin to 'add to the gene pool'. i'd rather he kept racing. but it seems jess jackson did the right thing with waiting a year-a lot of colts retired last fall that were appealing to breeders. i don't think that's happening with this years crop of 3 yo's.

If the BC wasn't being held at Santa Anita next year too, I'd say it would at least be a possibility. But, if the connections are that set against running on AWT, why bother returning for a 5yo campaign unless they really focus on the turf?

Do you think Red Rocks is all that great? Sure he is a BC winner but wasnt he a lot better horse in 06 than he is now?

Another question, would Curlin have caught Commentator had he been in the Whitney? I didnt think so either. And would the pace scenario been that much different? Its not like Curlin has any early speed.

Too good on dirt for anyone? Hes not Cigar or Skip Away. This is a horse who just last summer last to Any Given Saturday convincingly. I think thats a pretty strong statement Pgard.

Look on the bright side, maybe we'll have full fields for handicap division races next year.

He was 3 then and 5 now so it isn't really a stretch to believe he is at least the same horse he was two years ago. We really have no clue how good he might be if he had stayed over here the whole time cause some combination of lasix, firm turf, and American style turf racing makes him a far better horse here than he is over in Europe.
