Myth or reality?

What's your take.....

Does being in-foal improve a mare's performance?

The Indomitable DrugS 07-06-2008 11:32 AM

In most cases - it seems like it does.

TheSpyder 07-06-2008 11:34 AM

Well I know when my wife was pregnant I.....oh never mind.

Cannon Shell 07-06-2008 11:55 AM

I have never seen much of a difference

The Indomitable DrugS 07-06-2008 12:36 PM

I've seen a fairly big difference on most occasions.

I'm sure many remember the Paulson turf horse who had a win and 2nd at big odds after she returned to the races in foal. I think her name was Steal Buns or Buns of Steal or something like that.

There is a filly racing now at PID named Modern Verve that is pregnant. I actually thought about claiming her for 5K when she was entered on opening day - she dominated a 12 horse field at 16/1 odds in her return and I thought the race was a lot faster than the figure it got.

However, she was announced as in foal before the races. I didn't want to spend the money for her once I found that out. Turned out to be a mistake.

Steel Buns is her correct name.

Cannon Shell 07-06-2008 12:45 PM

Sometimes the break from the track may have more to do with the improved performance than being in foal.

I'm much less skeptical of this than BTW's horse color pedigree theory...

But, link?

I agree with Chuck on this one...the time she may spend away from the track has a bigger impact than being in foal...unless she is the type that is a total bitch when she is in heat (I owned one of those once, for about a month), but most fillies at the track are on regumate so that is a moot point I guess.

Cannon Shell 07-06-2008 02:09 PM

Dixie Flag was a total bitch who regumate never seemed to touch. She ran some of her best races in heat. As a matter of fact she seemed to never get out of heat.
