Big Brown works

Five furlongs in a supersonic 1:06.73

The time was Tiz Wonderful-eque.

Dave Grening with some fine reporting in the article posted on DRF:

Quote:

In his first official workout since the Belmont, Big Brown breezed five furlongs in a pedestrian 1:06.73 over a fast Aqueduct main track. Big Brown is targeting the $1 million Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park on Aug. 3 as his next start.

With exercise rider Michelle Nevin in her usual seat, Big Brown went in fractions of 14.15 seconds, 27.47, 41.02, 53.68, and he galloped out seven furlongs in 1:21.50, as timed by Daily Racing Form. As he did in his work prior to the Belmont, Big Brown drifted out off the rail during his gallop out.
Well - the work was slow - but he galloped out his next quarter mile in 14.77 seconds! Maybe Frank Lyons is right after all.

ArlJim78 07-02-2008 08:00 AM

wow, he really turned it on in the gallop out.

Am I the only one that sees this as more concerning than positive?

freddymo 07-02-2008 08:11 AM

it looks like his has done enough

Thunder Gulch 07-02-2008 09:23 AM

They should have retired him after the Preakness:confused:

parsixfarms 07-02-2008 09:30 AM

Maybe Dutrow liked the way Casino Drive was trained before the Belmont and is trying it himself.

Am I the only one that sees this news as completely uninteresting?

Yeah, I thought that was pretty sharp too. What did Frank Lyons say though?

The time means nothing to me. This speaks volumes though:

After the work, Nevin was low-key about the move. When asked if Big Brown felt the same to her as he did during his works for the Triple Crown races, she said, “He was alright. (The work) wasn’t anything special.”

As much as I'd love to see him race again, I have serious doubts, like most that that is going to happen. The work sucked, and there is more to this story than they are letting on.

They may not need to replace Kent on this horse. He looks like he is about to have his mysterious injury and be retired. You want to talk about a horse losing value. Wow. Looks like 3 races in 5 weeks ruined him. Not surprising with his lack of seasoning.

Rupert Pupkin 07-02-2008 06:34 PM

He galloped out 6 furlongs in 1:21.50, not 7 furlongs.

Exercise riders are normaly so enthusiastic and complimentary about the way their horses work. Michelle's comments are not a good sign at all.

sumitas 07-02-2008 07:52 PM

www.Nybreds.com describes Nevin as being nonchalant so who knows. 2nd paragraph.

I don't know how he typically works but why burn him out before the Haskell ? He needs to peak then, not now.

No need to be alarmed about the time of the workout, it was supposed to be slow. Now if his next few works are not up to par, then i will be worried. You know im not comparing Big Brown and Curlin, but Asmussen always works Curlin real slow off a race, or when there is no race in the near future. i witnessed a couple 1/2's in 53 or so this year, and a real slow 5/8 also. But when Ass tightened the screws a bit, Curlin always responded. Lets wait and see if BB has the same response.

I'm willing to give the horse some time, but something just does'nt seem right. Like you say.. Lets wait and see.
