I'm guessing that we don't see Curlin at the Breeders Cup...or alot of others that we'd like to see go just beacause of the track. Starting this year the Breeders Cup will never be the same because of surface changes from one place to the next.

Speak for yourself.
I know I'm in the minority on this one, but I for one certainly hope that Curlin does NOT go to the Breeders' Cup. I would love it if the top horse in the country opted to skip a stupid and pointless race like the BC Classic. The Breeders' Cup was a terrible idea to begin with, and every year it gets a little more desultory.
The more horses that skip it the better.

I must say I have attended several BC's over the years and have found it to be a very fun experience and after all isn't that what's all about?

Whether you get the very best in every race, every year who cares....and if you are an owner and have a chance to run for a $$$ million plus..sign me up!

It may be pointless but it is a $5 milllion dollar race.

Exactly. That is why I will think it is so great if it ends up being horses like Go Between and Student Council locked in a battle for a purse of that size.

I would love it if the Breeders' Cup somehow became about as important to the racing year as the Sunshine Millions is right now. While I am well aware of the fact that it will never actually happen that way, I have to admit to taking some level of delight in watching the Breeders' Cup REALLY self-destruct over the last few years. Curlin skipping it would be one more thing I could delight in.

I have been to two BCs recently myself ('05 and '06). Did I have a good time? Sure. But that doesn't mean it is a good thing for the sport.
If they changed the college football season from 12 games to 30....would I go to some of the other games? Yes. Would I enjoy myself at those games? Probably. Does that automatically mean that it would be good for the sport to make that change? I think not.

JMO, I'm thinking that it really depends on what happens the rest of the year, and who exactly shows up. Does Big Brown ever race or win again? Does Heatseaker win the Hollywood Gold Cup and continue on to the Pacific Classic, all the while maintaining his peak form that began early this year. Does Pyro win the Haskell and Travers and take over as top 3 year-old heading into the Classic? Do we have another horse like Daaher who emerges during the summer at Saratoga? What surface do we see Einstein on next?

If there is a compelling reason to be at Santa Anita the last weekend in October, he'll be there. But as of now, a switch to the turf and a date in France at the Arc is a fantastic target race.

Not sure I understand your argument...but all I know is I have been notified that I have seats for this years BC and I will be there...along with the Travers at Saratoga and opening day at Del Mar and I will be enjoying every minute and not really worrying about what might or might not be good for the sport..for if I am participating and enjoying ...it can't be a bad thing for me or the sport.:)

It will be interesting to see what horses don't go because of the track their using.. The ones that don't run well on poly will most likely skip it and therefor may not be as competitive of races...

If Curlin goes in the BC Classic, you can make a lot of money going with Heatseeker on top instead since I feel they should be about equal on that surface.

We may agree that the BC has hurt much of the fall schedule but the BC is making lots of money, therefore it is not really self destructing. We may not like what they are doing but they are figuring out that corporate = :$: and fans are fickle.

Name one horse outside of Curlin that may skip the race because of the surface that really matters?

i don't think that anyone will not go because of the track, and i don't believe that the surface is the reason that Curlin is not going.

So you're saying Curlin is the only horse of import that'll skip the BC because of surface? I'd be pretty surprised if that ended up being the case, considering the whole "it makes good horses look average and average horses look good" perception. You think Larry Jones is itching to run Proud Spell over Pro-Ride after how she ran on the poly?
