Who the heck is directing the ESPN coverage?
Race 2 from Belmont had 17 "Takes"(changes of cameras) for the race. 13 of them were before they turned for home.

When Durkin screams that a horse checked into the turn you never saw it.

Morons found a way to ruin the coverage.

Move over, I am puking too.

Agree - they need to cut the artsy ****.....just show the track feed and then give me the cute stuff on the replays...

someone in the truck trying to be creative.

AeWingnut 06-07-2008 11:48 AM

is this why TVG and HRTV aren't showing the races.. so ESPN can :zz:
"lets bring in the XFL cam"

I'll just watch it on the internet

what a bunch of idiots
always going to non-horse racing people to promote the sport

ArlJim78 06-07-2008 11:48 AM

one second you're looking at the pan view, then a quick cut to the view from space, then they are heading right at you, next the moving truck shot for about 3 seconds. makes your head spin. they have the right ingredients but they need a director that knows how to watch races. they should have one live race structure, and then a different one for replays.

Coach Pants 06-07-2008 11:52 AM

I'm hoping they show Big Brown bucking in the stall during the far turn of the 3rd. Maybe show P. Diddy posing like a douchebag at the sixteenth pole.

SundayStar 06-07-2008 12:26 PM

hopefully they don't go spastic like this with the belmont.

Remember that ESPN is not here to present a simulcast feed. They are here for entertainment. Anyone outside of our horse racing circle enjoys the cool angles, cuts and unique perspectives.

Yep, give a 14 to 23 year old a video recording device these days, and they'll likely produced similarly flavored work. For whatever reason, that's the preferred style at the moment, and has been for a few years....

MaTH716 06-07-2008 12:46 PM

Way to foucus on a run away winner guys, Nobody cares about battles for 2nd and 3rd!

Coach Pants 06-07-2008 12:47 PM

My mind is exploding.

And I see an industry guy is defending this debacle. Shocking.

I agree on it being entertainment but so many cuts as to make you nauseous doesn't seem the best way to go. I feel like I'm watching the opening battle scene of Gladiator.

we all would enjoy the cool angles, cuts and unique perspectives if they were shown at the proper time, which is after the race is over.

you give them far too much credit. people outside of horse racing circle deserve better, just like we do. the people outside wouldn't know the difference anyway.

Travis Stone 06-07-2008 12:53 PM

Maybe it's just our ignorance to what others think of the game? Or what they're looking for?

I haven't seen a race yet, so let me toss that in here, however, this dying need for the typical pan shot by racing fans on ESPN is lame.

How about this -- no viewers -- no ESPN -- then how would we feel? There would be no camera angles to show.

I just got to the booth and will watch the fifth race and see what it's all about.

I just know that a friend of mine who has a brother not at all interested in racing made comments about how he could get into it more with the cool camera angles they showed for Dubai's racing coverage.

Merlinsky 06-07-2008 12:56 PM

I actually wasn't having a problem with it until they allowed a drunken 5 year old hold the camera during that winner's circle photo op. One word...Steadycam.

Oh wait did I say drunken 5 year old? I meant Hank Goldberg.
