CHELOKEE: Good, Stable; Surgery next week

Dr. Bramlege just visited Media Center with Chelokee update...

Shockingly positive on all fronts.. Changed cast this a.m. and will operate on severe dislocation in ankle.. Swelling is down and he ate up this morning.. Career over of course but should be comfortable and could even stand if there was interest/demand (provided no complications from upcoming treatment)..

Look for further detail in the existing B-H story as it's being updated with more info..

What's the official word on this? Bad step or did he clip heels?

Just got a written elaboration of Bramlage's comments and there are a few more details including a survival chance rate termed "50-50" which seems a bit less rosy than when he addressed us at 11am...

I think he's being extremely careful with his assessment. He did say on HRTV that they do this surgery quite frequently. I think that he's just trying to be very conservative.

After Barbaro I have learned to never get my hopes up too high regarding these types of injuries, but hearing him discuss it on HRTV seemed to give decent hope that this colt will make it.

Assuming that he gets through surgery Bramlage said that his chances would significantly increase, but of course laminitis is always a possibility with this sort of injury and recovery.

Here's to hoping for the best.
