Go against Lava Man

I think the play of the day tomorrow is to go Celtic Dreamin over any horse you like except Lava Man. How can anyone play a horse that will be bet down to even money for doing absolutely nothing in his last 3 races?

Of course now that I've written this, Lava Man will probably prove me wrong and win by 5 but whatever :)

Couldn't agree more. Lava Man is a piece of garbage. Watch out for Mr. Wolverine

Piece of garbage? Whether he wins or not, he's not a piece of garbage.

gembo 04-27-2008 12:08 PM

If he's not a piece of garbage, then he's washed up.

You and me both! This horse may be a shadow of his former self, but his accomplishments speak for themselves, totally respect what he's done.

I've never understood the hatred people have for this horse.. amazing

I don't hate the horse. I just think he's washed up. There's a lot of money being put on this horse despite 3 lousy efforts in a row. It doesn't make sense. I probably won't lose out on much even if he wins.

letswastemoney 04-27-2008 04:12 PM

damn i had the right idea...just wrong horse :(

unless you were the one referring to him as a "piece of garbage," then I wasn't talking about you.

Gembo needs to have alittle respect for the horses that works so hard to keep us entertained.

gembo 04-27-2008 06:23 PM

Entertainment value is over. He couldn't even beat Epic Power who clearly was outclassed. I'll take my winnings, thank you very much.

He has had a nice career. I don't understand how in the f the trainer can stand there before the race and say this one-paced individual is ready to go.Didn't he even call him his "KOBE?" Then....(oh f yes there is a cherry on top,) he wins the biggest race of the day with a maiden (yes, that same maiden who twice has fried money at 3/5 etc.)Look back at that race in November at HWD PARK.The horse just closes up shop mid-race going 2 turns(at like 3/5 odds.)I mean their are angles (blinks,Decarchy decent sire etc.,) but there is a sleaze factor here that makes it the natural home circuit for the p6.We almost had a maiden exacta in a 250k stakes...Makes ya want to itch.

I was a fan first, well before I got involved in the business. Now, having been involved in the business my entire adult life, I am an even bigger fan. It's interesting, rather ironic, to hear people complain about owners not being sportsmen, selling out to the almighty dollar, retiring their horses, etc. Sure, that arguement is moot as it relates to geldings.

Regardless, whether he is or was a geographic monster, a CA only winner, or whatever you want to call it. This is a horse that people should appreciate, embrace, and enjoy watching. Bet against him, don't like him, whatever -- but hope that the business and the sport see many more like him.

On the other hand, people will always complain about "something" in our business and sport. Doesn't matter about what.

“We’ll have to kind of see how he comes out of it and evaluate him then," O'Neill said of his plans for the 7-year-old Lava Man. "It’s kind of hard to tell, but obviously we were expecting a win, so we’re a little disappointed. But as long as he’s fine in the morning, we can battle another race. I thought he looked dynamite early on. He just got a little bit tired.”

and of course this:

"I thought we were in a really good spot, and it was typical of a horse just needing a race," Nakatani said of Lava Man. "He broke sharp, got his feet up under him, and hopefully it will be a good steppingstone to the next one, and he’ll move forward off this race."

End this now..PLEASE

Garbage is a very improper term. Though I agree, he was a bet against this race, I think you better look up "garbage" in the dictionary before assigning it as a way to describe Lava Man.

tiggerv 04-27-2008 09:45 PM

If it was any other horse coming off the longest layoff of his career you would say the horse needed one. While it's likely Lava Man is done as a stakes horse, I don't know how you can judge anything off this performance. Certainly you don't want to embarrass him but there isn't any harm in running him again to get a better idea of where he is really at.

Perhaps O'Neill should feed Lava what he is feeding those maidens. The feature race was...interesting.

SCUDSBROTHER 04-27-2008 10:43 PM

Didn't this horse win races off layoffs before? Didn't he win the Sunshine Millions Classic thing at Anita off a layoff? These horses today aren't much.If he had something left ,he could of taken them.I know what people are saying about horses wanting to run,but it's not that kool to see a warrior like that go out there without anything to fight with.
