Epsom Derby

Interesting comments by Jim Bolger on racingpost.co.uk today -

"I do not think the Epsom Derby does that much for a stallion career"

It's not that long ago that the Derby did more for a stallion career than any other race.

What happened?

And can it return to its former glory?

he does have a point. I think its a fantastic race but whenever a horse wins it, they nearly always want to try to drop down to 10f to boost its stallion CV.. Its a bit like the King George as well, that has barely seen a 3yo in the last 5 years and it has lost alot of its prestigue. It seems like the only 12f race that all owners would sell their granny for is the Arc...

As brock said, Mr Bolger has a point. With so many breeders wanting speed these days, having horses win over 12 furlongs + isn't really thought of as a desirable stat for a potential stallion.
