Well. . . April 25th was a Wednesday last year which I think tends to be a better day to generate handle than a Monday since a lot of the big tracks are closed on Mondays. Plus, more people probably feel comfortable betting 3+s than 2 year-old maiden claimers going 2F. . . Doesn't really get more inscrutable than that.

I'm not trying to be a pain in the ass, but do you have a sample of another race?

A 2f baby race in April should not be used as an example when you are comparing the handle from year to year. I don't think any horseplayer bets his/her "normal" amount in a 2f race of first time starters.

As of yesterday, there was no purse agreement between the horsemen and Calder. In this situation, the horsemen have the right to deny Calder taking or sending simulcast wagering from or to other outlets. I assume there still is no deal and the horsemen exercised their right.

No problem, 2nd race open claimers $8,000 not much different. 9k for the mutual pool. Other pools similar.

Thanks Bruce.

The Blood Horse reported that the Calder signal was only allowed in in-state OTB's, and no ADW's. So to compare the handle it last year is totally worthless.

Actually, I think that was the point...

I could be wrong but I don't believe the initial post was trying to make that point.

I didn't either and was glad STS cleared it up for me.

Not all of us are on top of the horseman's contract negotiations with Calder.

The OTB's in NY couldn't take Calder today. It seems a case of biting off one's nose to spite one's face.

You nailed it. I should have added commentary instead of assuming most would have been aware that Calder was mentioned as another track that was affected in the bigger story about Churchill. It seemed unnecessary after Sent To Stud clarified. In any event those numbers are telling.

Here's the Bloodhorse story:

And here's how the negotiations could impact the Churchill meet and Oaks/Derby days:
