Aqueduct Grand Slam

Played my first ever grand slam today

$20- 5/10/3/5
i have the first 2, and there have been some bombs underneath, but also the favorites have all been on the board. how do they calculate this wager ? i have never played it before, and never followed it, my friend loves it though, he plays it 1-1-1-1 for 20 bucks everyday, the other day he turned no reply into a 33 doller horse, with a grand slam, i think he has talked me into liking the bet.

Personally I think it's a stupid bet. But I doubt many "sharpies" play it so maybe you can find an edge.

Would love to hear your thoughts on why you think it is a "stupid" bet..

even though i lost, i would like to hear your thought also...
i was live to fe fi, for 29 dollers, if he wont he would have paid 5.
so whats wrong with the bet

fpsoxfan 04-11-2008 04:17 PM

Nothing wrong with that bet. It's worth a stab. Why not? With the $ we throw around every day, how's that bet any worse than other stabs we take?
I thought he had a good shot.

I don't really feel like getting into this but here's a quick response-

It pays the same no matter which horse you have hitting the board. I could have 15-1, 8-1, 10-1, with the winner while another guy could have chalk, chalk, chalk, winner and get the same pay-off. So what should I do? Structure my betting around 3-5 shots hitting the board so I can make $35 or actually looking for value in other wagers? Maybe if my opinion was that three chalks in a row were hopeless and thought I had a strong opinion on the winner of the fourth leg I would play it. But how many times in your life have you ever had that opinion? And would that be the best way to profit from it? And I just don't see the appeal of a wager where I have to have four things happen to make a big $30 score. There are much more lucrative ways to turn a low-priced horse into value. It's a total gimmick bet for beginners and maybe that's why the pool netted a whopping $25K today while the PK4 pool was almost $160K.

I'm not really going to piss in your tent Hockey because I see what you mean, but for the money invested, it's not really that bad of a bet. We can argue all day on the specifics behind the bet he made, but I don't see it as a bad bet. Had he cashed? It would have been a great bet. Why? Because he won. I'm not a big Grand Slam Man, but I know some who swear by it.

hockey2315 04-11-2008 05:41 PM

I will say that the way he played it is probably the best way to.

Ronnie 04-11-2008 06:32 PM

I think there is value in the bet if you have a strong opinion that in one of the first three legs that the favorite will finish off the board, but you're not quite sure who is going to win the leg. Otherwise to be honest, I use it as a fun bet with my friends and family and I'm surprised at the payouts. Its a good way to get them interested. I wouldn't call it stupid.

hockey2315 04-11-2008 06:45 PM

It's fine for beginners, I guess.

i dont agree with that, if you love a horse in the 8th, for example no reply the other day.... put 50 to win on him or invest in a grand slam, where you dont have to win the first 3 like a pick 4, and then no replys grand slam comes back almost 30 bucks, i dont see how its bad, stupid, or for beginners.

i would never ever play the bet as a wheel, if i dont like a horse enough in the last race i would never play it, and if i cant single a horse just to run 1-2-3 then i dont belong playing anyway

hockey2315 04-11-2008 06:53 PM

The tri in that race paid $87 and was probably much easier to hit than the grand slam.
