Great Sunday Card at GP

Seesh. 4 Maiden claimers and a MSW out of 10 races... Couldn't they do this on a Monday ?

Linny 03-09-2008 09:27 AM

If they put this card on Monday, then Sunday would have been all $12,500n2L on grass.

the_fat_man 03-09-2008 10:41 AM

While the rest of the card sucks, there is a very nice turf race.

I mean, GP, does some nice things. For example, I love the way they've let those trees grow, so that you can't see the start of the inside horses in mile (dirt) races. And, just in case you want to actually look at those horses out of the gate and decide to fire up the headons, get ready for 5-6 seconds of extreme camera shake. Who cares are the start anyway?

Nice operation down there.

Fat Man,
You find more to complain about than my first three wives. Combined.

What do you think about today's Pletcher returnee, Deadly Dealer?

blackthroatedwind 03-09-2008 10:54 AM

The trees, that are a ridiculous nuisance, are coming down.

The racing at Gulfstream, fortunately, cannot come down any further. It's very disheartening. It used to be a meet filled with opportunities to make money. Now I feel like a miner digging through a stripped mine hoping to find one of the two diamonds left in a mass of drudge.

Unfortunately, it isn't just Gulfstream. Good horses just don't race enough anymore thanks to guys like Pletcher and Frankel. It might help if they had decent purses for a supposedly "premier" meet though.

I understand racing is obviously not as good in many ways than it once was. However, what Gulfstream has done is different, in that they have carded many more cheap races in the past without many better races that would fill.

Here's an example that a mutual friend of ours pointed out to me last night, as he has a horse eligible for this kind of race......there is not one stakes during the entire meet for 3YO fillies on the turf. I can see the logic in this.....they had one last year ( even after eliminating the Grade 3 Herecomesthebride ) and it attracted the 2YO champion ( Dreaming of Anna ) from the prior year. So, Gulfstream substituted an $11K Starter allowance for that race and saved themselves $64K to $89K. That's the bottom line to them. But, the bottom line, at least to this horseplayer, is that I am contributing significantly less takeout dollars to them. I can guarantee I have bet, easily, $250 less dollars daily at Gulfstream this year than last year. Now, I bet through NYRA, so maybe that only costs them about $300 a month.....but you get my point.

Here's my problem, StS

I was doing my charts, late last night, and I noticed that Notice Me Now, in the 2nd race, closed a ton on the winner in the last split. THEN, I noticed that he broke 7th, so I figured I'd better watch the headon for trouble CAUSE he broke from the 2 hole and the winner broke from the 1, and I couldn't see them on the regular shot. Still with me? So, I decide to fire up the headon. Now, it was a long day and I was kind of tired, as it was. But I couldn't focus after watching the first few seconds of that tape. It's flat out embarrassing. Of course, why would the track cater to pedants like me. WHO CARES about the start?

I have no opinion on the DD race. I like Trekkie and I Lost My Choo as spot bets.

I was wondering, as you have to with the state of Magna, if it were a money saving thing. Aren't they obligated to pay the horsemen a certain amount in purses?

The racing now is really no better than Calder. Even the Calder stakes are on par with Gulfstream these days, and in many ways better.

Well, I'm sure the handle on yesterday's match race easily compensated them for a day of purses.

IMO they are shooting themselves in the foot.

I hear you fat man, I hear you. They have the same tree problem at Tampa on the 7F races as well. And, of course, the start is the most important part of any race.

Good luck today....

It was an epic contest that almost made me forget about Seabiscuit.

They shouldnt be racing on Monday. The meets quality suffers in part because they simply run too many days. Outside of Saratoga and perhaps Del Mar there is no other meet that should run 6 day weeks.
