Curlin entered in Arc

by Desmond Stoneham

PLANS to travel the world's top-rated racehorse, Curlin, from the US to France for a tilt at the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe moved a step closer when he featured among 148 entries for the Longchamp race on October 5.

During a red-carpet appearance of the recent Dubai World Cup winner on Kentucky Derby day majority owner Jess Jackson stated that Curlin would be considered for both the Arc and the Japan Cup, and has duly remained true to his word.

Last year's runner-up Youmzain also features among entries for a race which will be worth €4 million, twice the 2007 figure.

Three year-olds make up 80 of the entries headlined by 2,000 Guineas winner and runner-up, Henrythenavigator and New Approach.

There are 33 fillies and mares, most notably Darjina, Finsceal Beo and Peeping Fawn whose younger brother, Group 1 winner Thewayyouare, is one of the three year-old colts entered.

Aidan O'Brien's contingent comprises 28, including recent Prix Ganay winner Duke Of Marmalade, while Saeed Bin Suroor's accounts for 11.

The race maintains its international flavour with Mike de Kock entering Dubai Sheema Classic winner Sun Classique.

The Japanese are not short-handed and last week's Tenno Sho runner-up Meisho Samson tops their list. Australian trainer David Hayes, who has yet to field an Arc runner, has put in 2007 Schweppes Oaks winner Anamato.

Thanks for that. I'd rather see him at the Arc than the Japan Cup.

tut tut, you could have called Youmzain a G1 winner from Sept 2006 when he won in Germany :)

The Prix du Cadran would be a better spot for him wouldn't it?

it probably is, but trainer thinks he might have a shot in a fast run 12f race a la Westerner..
He'll have a prep in the Geoffery Freer in Newbury over 1mile 5furlongs and he'd have to win it well to be considered for the Arc..

Meisho Samson...

Maybe the plan will be to start both Zarkava and Montmartre (their are stablemates) in the Arc.
Question: which one of them Christophe Soumillon will decide to ride.
Montmartre has never been out of the money in his four starts.
And Zarkava is unbeaten.
it's going to be a very interesting Arc indeed if Montmartre added to the mix.

He's likely to run in the Prix Foy as a prep.

The way the trainer was talking the other day, Montmarte is certain to run whatever the conditions. However, if the turf is riding soft, then Zarkava probably won't run.

Arc 'unlikely' for Curlin, say connections

Racing Post staff

CONNECTIONS of Curlin said on Tuesday that the Breeders' Cup Classic winner is unlikely to head to Longchamp for the Arc and will make his next appearance in the Group 1 Woodward Stakes at Saratoga on August 30.

Owner Jess Jackson ended speculation as to where the Curlin may head after his narrow defeat by Red Rocks in the Man o'War Stakes last time, stating that the Arc is "probably out for this year."

“We considered many options but we decided this is the best place to showcase his talent, racing him in America and racing him on a surface where he's already a champion” Jackson said. “This is a historic venue where he can add to his body of work. He's very fit, he's very happy here right now and we wanted to take advantage of that and do what's best for the horse.”

With the targeted race just two weeks before the Arc trial on September 14, and back on dirt, a trip to France is no longer likely this year but Jackson added that a return to turf had not been dismissed.

“The Arc is probably out for this year,” Jackson said. “We think he can be a turf champion but I'm not sure he has enough time this year to make the adjustment,” Jackson admitted. “The flexibility of his racing style and the tactics he'd have to use (on the turf) vary so you'd have to train him for that.”
