'Naughty' & Kelly's Expert Handling..
 

How about the career Pat Kelly has fashioned for Naughty New Yorker? Yesterday he won his 11th stake and pushed his career earnings to $965,000 in start 41 (or $23.5k/start).

One Gr. III win; a Gr. I placing; 4 other GSP's. 9 NY bred stake wins and at least one stake win at 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. Kelly never puts him in a spot where he can't hit the board, and despite being a very difficult horse to ride, rarely runs an off race.

He's whole, but I've never heard Kelly talk about long term breeding plans or not, but you would think he'd be plausible as a regional sire. Liked him at 3, and enjoy watching him now.

I remember back in '04 as a 2yo, he ran 2nd or 3rd to Galloping Grocer on NYB Showcase Day and there was a big debate on who would be the better of the two down the road (I thought Grocer...) I think that question has been answered... NNYer, one race away from a millionaire!

An aside: NNY'er is now Quiet American's 2nd highest earner (behind, of course, Real Quiet.)

Naughty sure looked good yesterday but it seems he beats up on same foes time after time.. Sort of like the WWWF in the 70's, you always knew the Davey Ohannons would fail in the end...

He was supposed to be the next Funny Cide.

Real Quiet had a halfway decent year last year with Pussycat Doll, Silent Pleasure, and of course Midnight Lute all having nice campaigns.
Still, Quiet American certainly won't be known as a great sire of sires anytime soon, but as you say, as a regional stallion NNY might be plausible.

Unlike many horses NNY's got soundness and durability, which the breed needs. Of course breeders all claim to want it too, but most don't take it when offered because most sound durable stallions are not fashionable at the sales.

Kelly has done a great job with NNY. As mentioned, he's not an easy ride. He weears that crazy blinker and sometimes chooses to close from far back, yet other times is involved early. I suspect that one has to let him do as he pleases, fighting would be futile. Bewteen Evening Attire and NNY Pat Kelly has proven his skills many times over, not that he needed to of course.

Quiet American is making a big impression as a broodmare sire.

To whom did Galloping Grocer barely lose the Remsen back in 2004? Eh?

Would have to be Rockport Harbor... That's funny too, because it's Galloping Grocer I didn't recall in the Remsen!

The "Grocer" was the one who came out of that race with the hype after he nearly beat the to that point undefeated Rockport Harbor. As a matter of fact, isn't there still a rockportharbor.com out there somewhere?

Yeah.. Still used as Rick Porter's portal to the public...

That race proved to be the undoing for my man Rocky. He never recovered from getting stepped on around the first turn. Its a shame too, I absolutely loved his digging style and stride.
As for the website, it has become more about Porter than it is about Rocky.

He was never that good.

I know that. I had the pleasure of visiting Rocky when he was stabled at Philly Park. He was the first 'Triple Crown eligible' horse that I was able to get close to. Hence, he holds a special spot in my mind. I now know what his limitations were, I was just then skewered by the fact that I met the big guy.
