Another college shooting - Northern Illinois University

Pretty wild right now on the local news stations.

Ole boy just walked into a lecture hall and went nuts....

Is there any updates on this story?

So far on CBS, they have had two girls that were in the class. It was a white dude in a ski mask, he came from behind a curtain and just started spraying a shotgun, ran out of ammo and then started firing a pistol. The girls said they hit the floor, and then ran out.

Reported as 17 injuries, 2 dead, one of them is the gunman

Maybe one of these days America will wake up and get some serious gun control. Too many guns on the street. KP

so you think 35 kids (or whatever the # was) in a lecture hall should have c carry? and they wouldn't have all shot each other?

and you think this ( or any other) nut wouldn't have done this if he thought they were all packin heat...shoot..most have a death wish anyway and probably would get even more off on getting into a shootout

I don't know Matt, it is a very interesting argument. Essentially what I think will happen is that colleges will raise tuition to cover the costs of protection. I also think that they will start locking down things like classrooms like they do dormrooms.

They could even take it another level and get vegas type security with facial recongition and things of that nature.

This guy today wasn't even a student, he was a past student that just came back. This guy was going to kill himself or get killed today. The only problem that one can not fix is the one where you are not breathing anymore. All problems are fixable or managable.

While I obviously don't condone this behavior, I can understand how people get to the point or stress level where you stop thinking clearly and start thinking crazy.

Not to pick on that one part of your post, but understanding how someone can stop thinking clearly and understanding how someone can try and blow away 20 people and themselves are really two different things

and I should have started with the beginning of your post because that is exactly what will happen. When HS Juniors and Srs tour a campus, along with the academics, facilities and staff will be an explanation of the campus security policy, lockdown procedures and fingerprint technology

It is really impossible to stop someone bent on doing something insane like this guy without getting lucky or turning the schools into prisons because they dont care if they get caught and in most cases want to get killed. How much do you want to bet that Mr. gunman has been prescribed antidepressants and stopped taking them?

Cannon Shell 02-14-2008 10:00 PM

Dont forget that most universities are politically correct to a fault and would not want to do anything that may 'offend' anyone including psychopaths or terrorists.

Scav 02-14-2008 10:09 PM

I am just saying I can see how people get to this point. And now that one person (Columbine) has done it, it is a thought in people that get to that point.

Someone just said something on the news that it is really a shame that students now have to be on 'alert' when they go to class.

Mr. Simon is correct in that you aren't going to stop these people without having Grade 1 snipers in these classes.

I will tell you this, I wish I had a solution because I could retire by 2009 if I did

I am a PhD student/TA at NIU. The class I am a TA for actually meets in that classroom in Cole Hall every Monday and Wednesday. I was sitting in that classroom yesterday from 11:00-11:50. This whole thing is freakin' nuts.
The latest reports indicate that a total of six people (including the shooter) are dead with I think 15 more injured. As far as I know so far, everybody I know is okay, but it is still possible that some of my students (or former students) are among the injured....or worse.
I don't actually live in DeKalb (I live over an hour away, just outside of Chicago) so I don't know everything that has been going on, but this has been one hell of a crazy day. Apparently the shooter was a grad student in the Sociology department. The sociology department shares a building with several departments - including the history department which I am part of. I guess there is a pretty good chance that I rode in an elevator or said "hi" to this guy sometime last year.
This whole thing is just absolutely crazy.

Danzig 02-14-2008 10:14 PM

whenever something horrible like this shooting today happens, people want to talk about ways to keep it from happening again. much as we all would like to think we have control over our lives...really, you don't. the bizarre can take place at any time. not a good feeling, but very much a reality.
used to be that if someone felt suicidal, they'd take themself out. now, it's take as many others as you can first. i don't know why, just seems to be the case these days.
more gun control will only affect the law abiding citizen. criminals are just that, i doubt a gun law being broken would give them pause.

I could just imagine the emotions man. It is just ridiculous that people get to this point. Thoughts are with you as I am guessing you have a ton of emotions going through your head
