Help with NY Claiming Rules

If a horse in entered in a claiming race and scratched, what are the rules about where he can be entered next? A standardbred owner friend of mine claims that in his sport they must be run for a tag next time out and I was wondering if a) that was true and b) if that applied to thoroughbreds as well.

The reason I ask is because I was seriously considering partnering up with said friend and a few others to drop a slip on Tuffend in the first. I was shocked to see him in for 20K after running a good second to Please Impress last time out and then watching that one come back and romp Special Weights last Saturday. What could Contessa have been thinking putting this one in for 20K?

Please don't spend $20K for that horse.

He scratched.

I understand.....I read his post.

He does bring up an interesting question. Chuck or Alan ( Outofthebox ) should know the answer.....as well as a few others here.

Right- I didn't. Second time in two days for me. I might need an equipment change.

I'd just guess that if I was going to buy a horse out of there maybe City Chatter? The NY Bred consideration is there.

Well I obviously can't since he's scratched but 3YO NW1X NYB isn't exactly the toughest group you'll run into.

Andy's opinion will be stronger but I'd say a horse like Tuffend, while he has some upside, might be hard pressed against NY bred N1X company. Please Impress did run well on Saturday but did so in wire to wire fashion on a good rail in a field that really only had two legitimate runners in it.

We just don't agree concerning this horse. He ran a 48 Beyer fig under optimal circumstances. Where are you going with him?

In TB's there is no set rule about a horse scratched out of a claiming race. You can run back wherever you want. I worked in the standardbred business a long time ago and dont recall such a rule but it is entirely possible that could be that way.

I know it was in Harness racing at least at one time.

There is no rule like that at FL. Usually you have to wait 5 days before you can re enter unless the racing office hustled you to another race..

Here's my thoughts.

A) I think Andy B is a very smart dude but his figures don't always make sense to me. I thought Please Impress ran a big race that day and if I remember correctly his Beyer was only a 60. I don't know what he got on Saturday. Sometimes things just don't add up to me with Beyers. Take Hey Byrn's 97. Visually Impressive, more so than Pyro? Pyro earned a 90 and is favored to win the Derby, Hey Byrn runs a 97 and the Fat Man (who's perspective I enjoy until he tells me my horse is a suckup) starts talking about "Wipeouts". But the Beyer supports Hey Byrn in a thrashing? So I take the Beyers for what they are opinions.

B) He's run only 2 races. That race was a pretty good effort after 6 months on the bench.

C) They paid $81,000 for him as a yearling, so there must be something there. What is that something? He's a full to SP Solid Strike.

D) His Dam is "Solid Claim"! Are you kidding?

I was thinking for 20K it would've been worth a shot. Anyhow, I respect you tremendously and will not dive in on this animal should he appear in for a tag again. But, it'll be interesting to see where he shows up next to say the least.

Sorry OTB, I was posting that after someone asked what they would do with the horse. Should have been more clear

Im sure he will end up there come april. Contessa sent a bunch up there to Donna Bireta, who did quite well with some shippers.

blackthroatedwind 02-14-2008 11:48 AM

I absolutely agree about the numbers in general, and how they are earned, especially when you're dealing with the Aqueduct inner. However, that being said, Tuffend earned his under optimal circumstances and I would say there is a very good chance he ran his best race off the layoff.

I liked him that day, and while I got rewarded due to the DQ, overall I thought his performance was dreadful.

Before you make the claim, ask yourself this question - "What is your out move?"

If you think you can get out of the horse, or most of the way out, by dropping and winning if it is a bad claim, take a shot.

If you are claiming at the bottom and you've got no where to go except to eat your capital and take a complete bath if you claim a turd, don't drop the slip.

I always have an out figured before I claim a horse, assuming the horse will make it back to the track for another race.

BTW, keep in mind that claiming ain't handicapping - they are two different worlds.
