How much can one horse take?

I am looking at Saturday's Tampa card and who do I see in the 3rd race?

Dennis's Dream who ran 6f on Jan 18 (Clm 5k N2Y) and won.
11 days later he is stretching out to 8.5f (Clm 5k N2Y) wins and gets claimed.
4 days later, the great Pernel Bagwandeen sends him out for a 6.5f dash (Clm 5k), wins his third in a row and Michael Thomas claims him back.
7 days later (Saturday) he is going to run 7f (Clm 6250) looking for his fifth in a row (he won at Calder last June).

That is 3 races in 11 days and 4 races in 22 days. I realize he has been printing money for 22 days, but when does this poor horse get a rest?

This game has a lot of trouble managing itself. To put it mildly. Maybe horse racing needs intervention.

Upper management at the track should contact the vet so that the horse is scratched. Give this horse a break for crying out loud.

As long as a horse is sound, it should be able to run quite often. I would assume he isn't really working bwtween these starts. I think you should have a closer look at a guy like Baffert who'll work horses handy every 7 days for months on end.

If you don't like the way the horse is being managed, you could always pony up and make a claim. This is a tough business for animal lovers to be a fan of. It is far worse when you find a horse running that frequently who isn't winning.

That statement is used quite often around here. Along with the old "I'd take that horse in my stable anytime" whenever anyone is perceived to be badmouthing the horse.

I didn't say wether I liked or disliked the way the horse is being managed. Winning is the name of the game and this horse is certainly doing that. I was just pointing out what the horse was going through and asked when he was going to get a rest.

For what it's worth, before Jan 29 he last raced at Calder on 6/9 and won:

1 MILE 70 YARDS ALLOWANCE OPTIONAL CLAIMING $26,000

Quote:

DENNIS'S DREAM stalked the pace, moved to gain a slim lead soon after entering the far turn, contested the pace with MONEY ISSUES to inside the eighth pole and was all out to prevail. MONEY ISSUES rated off the pace, rallied to catch DENNIS'S DREAM on the far turn, tried that rival to inside the eighth pole, then was outgamed to the wire. JAKES R WILD unhurried after breaking slowly, closed to gain the show while no threat to the top ones. DESULTORY tired from good position. SUAVE BARON off slowly, was never a factor. LEONARD set the pace along the inside into the far turn, then faltered. COLLECTIVE tracked the pace, bore out leaving the first turn and again on the far turn, then was not persevered with.
His owner and trainer were listed as Naresh Nagrani & Jose Pinchin, so he must have been sold to Michael Thomas during that time.

(I realize the original post stated he won in June, but thought perhaps he had raced between then and Jan. Did the win take a lot out of him?)

reminds me of Unusual Suspect's campaign last summer. It seemed like he'd show up every other week.

By asking when the horse would get a rest, you passive agressively stated a dislike for how the horse was being managed. I simply mentioned that you are enpowered to change how he is managed if you so choose.

pointman 02-08-2008 09:43 PM

There was a time where this was the norm.

You couldn't be more off base. You have completely misinterpreted my original post. You are reading something into a post that just isn't there. If I didn't like the way the horse was managed or what was happening in general, then I would be the one asking for the track to step in and scratch. I don't begrudge anybody that is making money at the lowest level of claiming. More power to them.

I asked two questions that were pretty much rhetorical, because nobody on this forum can answer either question unless trainer Michael Thomas is lurking about.

I now regret starting this thread.

And it was snowing too!!!

No no no no no. The horse is being abused because he is winning. That's the point.

He finished 2nd going 5 wide throughout and hung late in this recent 7F test.
