Nah, he sucks. The horses he's got are great, though. They train themselves.

loaded this year.

Seeing as how you just brought Rounders up, thought I would add how I just watched the movie again yesterday, and it never gets old. I watch it probably once a week

Personally I think the one he scratched out of the race Fierce Wind won on Monday will turn out to be OK and the better of the two.

I also think Cool Coal Man might be pretty good but I've always kind of liked him so maybe I'm biased.

I also like that one. Think he'll be Mineshaft's best of his first crop, not sure he's going to be ready for the Derby though- might need more time to develop but he'll run all day for sure.

Cool Coal Man? He's fine. He didn't scratch from Tampa for any physical reasons. He may not prove to be a Derby horse but he'll get his chance to show whether or not he belongs.

Nah, I mean developmentally, not physically- especially given Mineshaft took so long to develop. Seems like he's still growing, putting it all together. But you never know with these 3yos... Sam F Davis likely for him?

I love Mr. Zito, and I pull for him, but frankly it seems like he's afraid of huge success. I love his horses. I just hope that he gets them in the hunt in a big way.

That's not true.

And, by the way, he's already hugely successful.

The guy wins races all the time and he is afraid of success.......I just don't get this board sometimes.

It is ridiculous that hard on that some people have for him. The guy is great for the game (personality-wise), he wins races, and does right by horses and from all accounts, his people. WTF else do people want this guy to do?

blackthroatedwind 01-23-2008 10:27 PM

We all have our own pet peeves. He's my good friend, so obviously I defend him, but I'm sure there are trainers I don't like that others do. Doesn't make me right and them wrong. I argue with Byk all the time about trainers he likes that I don't. The truth probably lies somewhere in between.

I don't think Oaklawnfan was being critical. But I also don't know why he believes Zito is afraid of success. Doesn't make sense to me. I would say that most trainers fear the opposite....lack of success.

I thought it was great to see the BC led by guys like Zito and Baffert. Nearly an old-school feeling to it...

Obviously when you are friends with certain trainers you will defend them and their stock. I like Nick and as such I cheer for him and his stock.
I also find that as a handicapper I have to be careful to not allow personal preference to alter my view of a race. Certainly it's nice to know certain things going in like "we're changing his bit or adding a tongue tie" but you still have to handicap the entire race.

I have tried to avoid become too chummy with trainers as I do feel it can cloud your handicapping. OTOH, if you spend alot of time at the track and have friends who work there you will make friends with trainers and have to weigh it in your decisions at the windows.

As for fans following a public handicapper who may have favorite trainers based on friendships may I quote the late, great Joe Palmer. "A prejudiced witness is all right, if you know what his prejudices are"
