GP 9th (1/19): Mr. Maestre (12-1)

SPOT PLAY: Highly recommend close examination of the fascinating #5 Mr. Maestre in today's 9th at Gulfstream (assuming they race...).

6 yo is 2nd off extended injury break stemming from his enormous performance 11/24/06 at Calder which earned a 111 Beyer. That run by this Lord Carson bay was not entirely isolated in his career as he had blasted MSW foes at age 4 in his 9th (!) career start which received a 96 BSF.

Walter Rosas-Canessa brought Mr. Maestre back in a 5f CRC turf dash and now stretches him an added furlong on the main: the same pattern employed before the 1:09.4 minor stakes performance in November '06. He showed in a N2L win that he does not need the lead to be successful, and even in the comebacker, gone 400+ days, was beaten 2L when 4th behind Hollywood Left.

He is 5/2-2-0 going three-quarters; has a placement in 2 tries across I-95; drilled 4f in :48.2 (3/49) n the slower CRC strip 10 days after his return race; and will be a price. It is a deep and curious group, but I'll be focusing on this guy with the 'logicals' and another price or two...

Good luck..

Heard you talking about him on yesterdays show after Gus' pick 4 segment (which I just placed my bets on) I just put $5.00 across on him.. Thanks for the tip Steve. Hopefully we'll both have a better weekend than last...

This guy looks to be the speed of the speed, especially with this rider. With a.m. line of 12-1, he is the key to what should be a nice pick 4.

Watch us all bet and him go off at something like 4/5..lol

race seems loaded with speed although that might not matter at gulfstream. would be curious to know rosas-canessas record at gp over the last few years? but thats why he will probably be 15 or 20-1

blackthroatedwind 01-19-2008 08:58 AM

If this horse wins that race you better call the paramedics to revive me.

he's been pretty camera-shy over the years, 8% wins (213 starts) since 1/1/07. Tough race on paper given a couple of the contenders haven't raced since 2006. If #4 Bold Start is anywhere near his 10-1 m/l I am inclined to back him. He may not have measured up to the better 3yos last year but he was competitive and could be better than these.

Love the way he was brought into this race following the tightener on the grass. He will be competitive, tough race.

I wish you and all the DT'rs the best of luck with this one Steve! I listen to ATRB religiously and know you pick PLENTY of nice priced horses. I hope Rivera can give him the ride he needs.... Most of the best jocks on the grounds are in this race and that concerns me as much as some of the other horses.
That plus the legions of followers who await your selections each day (myself included) will probably pound this guy to chalk status!! That being said, I'll have my $10 invested on a 2-5-6 Ex. box and a $2 W + Pl ticket thrown in the pot and will hope for the best. Good luck to all the DT"rs today!! "Hit'm Hard"...

I see what you did there.

Yeah the beyers are solid, but this one has never had the lead after the break. Now he's stuck wide and will either lose ground, be 6 wide up front, or miraculously have a clear lead.

Looks like a toss to me.

hoovesupsideyourhead 01-19-2008 10:36 AM

or he stalks and pounces....we will see.

VOL JACK 01-19-2008 10:48 AM

Going with th # 9 Saint Daimon. Like betting the "chief" at Gulfstream.

Looks like a bad morning line for the entire group. Bold Start is 10-1 on the line and probaly will be 4 or 5-1.

Good Racing luck to all today.

pgardn 01-19-2008 10:53 AM

what a mess.

Good luck to those who go.

I see what you are talking about but I think it will be the #7 Busmills Best that does the pouncing.

as far as 12-1 horses go I would include #6 Izzie's Halo
easier competition and returning to dirt might be enough

good luck.

Big half hour for Stanley Gold and Jacks or Better Farm.. Win the Pasco with Honey Honey Honey and 2nd here 20 min. later with the venerable Winnie's Tiger Too at 35-1..

AeWingnut 01-19-2008 06:08 PM

MISTERGEE 01-28-2008 03:42 PM

Anyone that bets a Walter Rosas-Canessa horse back at Gulfstream needs serious help.
