Funny Story

OK, I hate racetrack stories, but this is sort of funny.....

I was betting the 8th at Gulfstream over the phone. I bet $100 to win on the 3, Mr. Whimsey ( no jokes about me being a pathetic chalk eating weasel please ). Then I started betting some doubles, at which point the operator said " There's no 11 in the next race. " Sure there is I said. Then she realized her error and was taking my bets at Turfway.....and they were in the gate at Turfway. Luckily we cancelled the Turfway bet and moved to Gulfstream. No big deal.

So now I'm half-assed watching the 8th at Turfway while I wait for Gulfstream and as they go over the wire I notice the 3 wins. That's funny, I think, as I guess I wish I hadn't bet doubles and realized my mistake. Then I see the odds.....he's 29-1!

He got DQ'd.

Evens out

For every story like that there seems to be 1 or 2 that don't work out. Glad this one did and the 3 won at Gulfstream for fun...

Would have been a better story if you'd let the Turfway bet ride (not that many would). The thrill and then the agony.

blackthroatedwind 01-16-2008 04:47 PM

I almost had to let the bet ride as the horses were literally in the gate when she realized her mistake.

I cancel mispunches....and have no idea why anyone wouldn't.

The racing gods apparently plan on being good to you this year - go for it!

Out of curiosity, how would've you handled the situation if she hadn't got the bet changed?

In this case it was an operator that has been there for a long time, is very good, and I like a lot personally. So, I would have just let it slide because it comes out of her pocket. However, it also wasn't a lot of money so it's easy for me to feel magnanimous. If it was thousands it would have been a problem I guess. I'm extremely careful, and the operators are good, I have had one problem in about 14 years.....and I make a lot of bets.

If it was an operator that I am not comfortable with, though usually I hang up on these, I would have made them make good on the bet.

Do you say anything when you hang up on them or just hang up? Like "You suck, GOOD BYE??"

Mistakes are the undoing of many tellers. I worked at Lone Star for two years as a teller and made only one mistake that I couldn't cancel during that time. I worked in the Simulcast Pavilion so it was basically only simulcast races. One night a guy wanted a trifecta at Hoosier that was supposed to be 2,4/2,4/1,3,5,7 for $8. I instead punched 2,4/1,2,3,4,5,7/1,2,3,4,5,7 for a total of $30. When I punched it he said, "Oh I can't afford that, cancel it." As I put the ticket back in the machine the race went off. He felt bad but I told him, no worries, my mistake, I'll just put it in the drawer. Then as he walked away from the window I stole a peek at the race. It looked like the 4 was well clear and the 3 and 1 were fighting it out for second and third. It ended up coming in 4-3-1 and paid $165 for $1. I gladly put the $135 in my pocket.

Sometimes mistakes work out...most of the time they don't.
