Delaware 'Sponging' Incident Probed

Unbelievable. I hope they find whoever did this, and throw them in jail.

A disturbing event. Lots of room for security enhancements in horse racing.

despicable

Now really what kind of deviant thinks up this crap? Some algae had to lie awake thinking "I gotta win this two year old allowance race..I know I'll stick a drain sponge in the throat of Jones's horse that"ll do it!!

We should do a poll of trainers/connections likely to do something like this......There are only 5 horses in the 8th race 10/16/07 which I had the pleasure of seeing live that day.

The race was won by Jeremy Rose riding for Hamilton Smith owned by William Backer. Second was the early speed ridden by D V Beckner for Guadalupe Preciado for West Point Stables the horse and sponge placed third followed by Ramon Dominquez for Randy Nunley owned by Porter Racing with the trailer being A Freitus for Victor Collazo for Leonard Liberto

SO who would you vote for here? You have to be one desperate soul to stick a sponge so far up the nose of a horse that you impede breathing!!!

Lifetime ban if this ones caught for cruelty..

it doesnt have to be someone connected with an opposing horse in the same race....it could have just have easily been done by someone vindictive to the connections and wasnt in the race...

...or someone looking to make a score in a short field by eliminating the chalk.

Like in many criminal cases, the only way they catch the scum is if someone talks.

This particular trick is almost as old as American horseracing. Reportedly, extra security was placed around Seabiscuit to prevent, among other despicable acts, shenanigans like this. Perhaps I'm naive, since cheating goes on everywhere, but like you, docicu, I'm a regular at Delaware and I find it particularly disturbing that this has happened there. Thankfully, the horse survived the skullduggery.

Personally, I think one of the squirrels might be behind it. There's this one bad actor that always chatters at me when I break out the peanuts.

Seems like an odd race to sponge if you're trying to make a score. . . They probably weren't expecting her to still get third either. . .

azerica 12-05-2007 01:19 PM

I vote if we find out whomever done this, then we stuff a sponge you know where, lifetime ban and a jail sentence....thank God the horse survived...

Classic stuff. Thx renews my confidence that racing is F&*k%D

Trying to figure out why someone would do this to get a betting angle. Seems like just some vindictive SOB -- hope they are caught and prosecuted.
