what about herbstreit

we talked about this on the way home tonite. how can these different sports people come on and make these announcements about things that don't even happen? isn't it irresponsible to kirk to have come on, and say 'sources tell me miles is going to miching'? of course since there seems to be no backlash, i guess they can keep right on doing it. i think it stinks.

Unless someone like the AD at Michigan set him up to test the waters here...this guy doesn't have the rep as one of the snakes. There will be more to this story...

Kirk is the legitimate "Golden Boy" at ESPN. I enjoy his commentary for the most part, but most of the talking heads do just that!!

Miles left it open.
He could have stopped it all early on.

All he had to do was say I am and will be the coach of LSU next football season.

He did not say the bolded until pressed hard after further talks
with LSU. Miles was leaving the door open. He is not stupid,
the statement above would have ended it all early on.

So then Herby
got to play with the ball.
And he did so irresponsibly.

If Miles had said what he said yesterday a week ago the whole thing would have never occurred. That is typical ESPN now. They are now making up news instead of just claiming credit for breaking stories that they didnt break.

Danzig 12-02-2007 11:11 AM

les miles said all along he had not been contacted. finally his agent was given permission to talk post-sec championship. BUT it never even got to that point.
it's a shame that because of the word play of some, that all coaches are suddenly suspect. for anyone to come out the morning of the game and make this bs announcement was ridiculous at best. so miles called his conference and put a stop to it, which meant espn benefitted twice from this story. wonder what their ratings were for yesterday...
but espn will continue with that kind of crap, what reason is there not to? and every once in a while, they'll be right.

I think that if I was LSU, I might get rid of Miles right now. Looking at his press conference when he was saying that he's always going to be a Michigan man, he's always going to pull for them and for their next head coach was one thing. I can understand that since he did go to Michigan. But the part where he said that he's not going to Michigan......and that makes him sad.....that's a little bit too much for me. LSU provides him with everything he could want and he's sitting there saying that he's sad that he can't take the other job and that he's a man with two loves? Again, while a part of me can understand how he feels, another part of me would feel slighted as an LSU administrator when I've supported a guy, gave him the opening to talk to the other school, give him everything and he's still sitting there saying he's sad that he can't take the other job.

In order to say that Herbstreet was irresponsible in his reporting, one would have to know for a fact that he wasn't given his information by reliable sources. I wouldn't be surprised at all to find that Miles had told Michigan earlier in the day that he would take it and then changed his mind. It's not like that doesn't happen in major college coaching. I saw people report that Billy Donovan was taking the Orlando Magic job. Was that irresponsible reporting?

miles had to make a decision, and he made it--while at the same time acknowledging that he was in essence closing the door on what is a life long dream. i think he was being refreshingly honest, and i appreciated it. no wonder people hold back, or use political speak, they get fried when they speak from the heart. i felt for the guy, but he found a new home three years ago and has come to love it. lsu let him know they wanted him to stay, and he's happy there. so what's wrong with one last nod to his former home?
miles said he never spoke to michigan, there were no talks as yet, and would not be til after yesterdays game. so how would he have been able to say he'd take a job that wasn't formally offered? or maybe michigan thought he was a shoe in due to all the talk in recent weeks. at any rate, whoever kirks source was-he better get a second opinion before reporting next time.

You are assuming that Miles never talked with anyone regarding the Michigan job. In fact, history shows that many of the name coaches in college football are two dollar whores who sell themselves to the highest bidder leaving university programs and student athletes high and dry when they move on to a bigger payday. I'd bet the house that Miles talked to someone from Michigan. It is his Alma Mater and it is a school named in his contract that he could opt out of and speak with regarding a vacancy. And I have no doubt that a source with Michigan talked to Kirk Herbstreit and told him exactly what was reported.

If I were a betting man, I'd bet this is exactly correct. I think to believe that Miles never had any talks with anyone from Michigan, not just over the past week but also over the past years, is naive.

Danzig 12-02-2007 12:10 PM

that may be so, but it all worked out well in the end for those of us who wanted him to stay.
i just also think it's a shame that since some are lying whores, that all are thought to be so.

Mortimer 12-02-2007 12:54 PM

I could be wrong....(A-HAHAHAHAHAHA---oh....pardon me) but wasn't there a strong indication LLes is getting a new contract out of the non existing Michigan threat?

Ya gotta love ICU..I mean LSU fans.

Ranked number one.....lost to fall from no.1.....only to regain that number one ranking.........and to prove the first time wasn't a fluke......lost again.

Danzig 12-02-2007 01:02 PM

how many teams have now shown they didn't want that ranking? a lot. i can't remember the last season that this much change occurred in the top spots.
