avg vet bill?
 

what is an average vet bill, for a cheap horse in training that is running, and at what point is is the care and combo of treatments overkill? in other words are there things you would give to a horse running for higher purses that is not worth giving to cheap horse?

I'll only tackle your first question as that's the only one I am qualified to answer.

I've had average vet bills of about $150-250 per month, and I've had average vet bills of $500-600 per month. Those are actual #'s. Both trainers are 25% trainers, and I am sure those people here who know me, and who trains for me, could probably figure it out. It's important to note though, the latter is a guy who puts his horses on a "programs" -- feed, supplements, regular treatment, and so on . . . and no, the trainer is not Scott Lake.

I know for a fact (i've seen the bills) that alot of the bigger trainers vet bills come in over $1000 a month. I also know some successful trainers that are willing to eat a portion of the bill because they dont want the owner to know everything that they are giving. Part of the problem with vets and modern technology in regards to horses is that in many cases it is just too expensive. There are lots of things that can be used diagonistically that just simply cost too much to use on a regular basis for ordinary horses.

like chuck said...or someone said....it costs about 30k a year to run a horse, regardless of the horses ability. they all still eat, etc....

thanks for the input guys,ive got kinda cheap claimers with vet bills ranging from $100-$1,000 monthly. i amjust wondering if a cheap horse really needs $1,000 worth of assorted drugs supplements etc
