Track announcers - pet peeve

First peeve: Track announcers have lost the ability to verbally describe a horse race. You don't know what's going on unless one is watching it at the same time.

If you're just listening to a call from the top of the stretch, good luck figuring out what is happening, who is holding on, who is passing who.

Second peeve: at Kee today, the placements weren't even announced, or who the photos were between, or who was up at the finish. Very disappointing announcing today at Kee.

I actually think Vic Stauffer does a pretty good describing the action. He'll let you when a horse is making a move or is "all in" and struggling. He gets a little amped up sometimes, but he's grown on me. I'm looking forward to the Hollywood meet to hear him again. Gulfstream made a usual poor decision in letting him go in favor of Larry Colmus. Does Gulfstream do anything right these days?

What's wrong with Larry Collmus? He's only been calling races accurately for years with the perfect mixture of emotion and unmistakable clarity. He's one of the best in the country in my opinion.

That being said, Gulfstream does do very little right.

if you owned a track wouldnt you rather have stauffer calling the races....... i would

Riot 10-06-2007 10:48 AM

That's the type of racecalling I like: the mix of emotion and clarity, the excitement, the race caller not being afraid to put their impressions and a little editorializing into the mix.

I was listening to Australian racing last night: 14-18 horse fields, the race caller accurately getting all horses in at the points of call, but adding during the call how they were doing: "covered up nicely on the rail", "overracing a bit", "just off the pace, not her usual style but going well", "settled nicely at the back of the pack", "two off the rail going comfortably but needs to come off or he'll get trapped here" - and a being able to describe an eight horse calvalry charge - and notice all the horses coming home hard outside to inside - wow! :D

I want to be able to just listen to the race (not view it), and know what is going on!

Now, Durkin just gave a great call of the third at Belmont - had it on, heard it from the other room, and knew exactly how it unfolded!

Is your vision failing?

Depends upon what I am looking at .... ;)

ah nobody ever mentions the second"speaker of the house" in chicago kevin goemmer rip. go watch this race from turfway a few years back where he gives his classic line and tell me if you like his race call. type in the horse danieltown and go to his race on 1/24/04@turfway

I agree 100% I really do think Larry Collmus is the second best track announcer in the country. My future prediction is when on the sad day when Tom Durkin decides he want' to call it quits, Larry Collmus will be his succesor.

My favorite is the River Downs guy.

And the race is on!! Yeehaw!! George Jones!!

Well, the race is on
And here comes pride up the backstretch
Heartaches are goin' to the inside
My tears are holdin' back
They're tryin' not to fall
My heart's out of the runnin'
True love's scratched for another's sake
The race is on and it looks like heartache
And the winner loses all

jballscalls 10-08-2007 10:32 AM

Hey be nice to the River Downs guy!! if you mess with the race is on thing i can always be the 280th guy to say they're off LOL
