Tiki Barber

I compare this guy to the type of person that when they have nothing to say in an argument, they go below the belt on something not pertinent to the argument. While I completely agree that a coach can take away your love and passion for a sport (it happened to me in baseball my senior year, new coach, baseball didn't become fun anymore), Tiki should just shut his mouth, making him look like a bigger idiot that he is.

You can tell that he wants to play football again, and trying to figure out a way to get back in.

SCUDSBROTHER 09-04-2007 12:56 PM

To me,the best leader(manager, coach or whatever you want to call it) in professional sports is Mike Scioscia. His teams play as "one." To me,this Coughlin guy is the opposite. So, I really see no use for this guy as a head coach.I saw Coughlin and Tiki together ON THAT FOX NEWS MORNING SHOW (a couple years ago.) Tiki was kind of hosting it for a while(when people were gone for a week or two.) They seemed to like each other then. Why would he have had Coughlin on there if they weren't getting along? Tiki threw in the towel(retired) very early. How much of a competitor is that guy? I mean he would rather be a bullshit guy on T.V. than play ball,so he was part of the problem with that Giants team.Neither one of these deserve the attention they get.Coughlin is a loser, and Tiki is a quitter(and a self-serving back stabber.)

I think Barber is a smart man.
He will be able to walk at 60 years old.

Football is an absolutley brutal sport on the body. If I had a son good enough to play I would not let him.

Baseball is clearly the way to go. DH for life. The best salaries are in baseball, you get to spend a heck of a lot of time clowning around... and you really dont have to be in the kind of shape you must be in for football or basketball.

I don't have a problem with him retiring.....totally your own decision--but, the way he threw Eli Manning under the bus and then backed over him again was wrong. Manning may be a lousy leader, only time will tell, but that is stuff that should stay in the locker room. Who is going to trust him with anything confidential?

In excerpts of his new book "Tiki: My Life in the Game and Beyond" obtained by the New York Daily News, Barber writes that he might still be playing if Tom Coughlin weren't still coaching the Giants.

"If Tom Coughlin had not remained as head coach of the Giants, I might still be in a Giants uniform," Barber writes, according to the Daily News.

"[Coughlin] robbed me of what had been one of the most important things I had in my life, which was the joy I felt playing football," Barber wrote, according to the newspaper. "I had lost that. He had taken it away."
Barber credits Coughlin with solving his chronic fumbling problems but wrote that he believes it was his performance that kept Coughlin employed by the Giants. Under Coughlin, Barber ranked among the NFL's top five rushers; in the three seasons beginning in 2004, Barber gained 1,518 (fifth), 1,860 (second) and 1,662 yards (fourth).

"It's a double-edged sword, because as much as Coach Coughlin helped me, I also helped Tom Coughlin," Barber wrote, according to the newspaper.

According to the Daily News, Barber also claims in the book that he was shorted about $10 million in his career by the Giants, who underpaid him compared with other top running backs.

This guy should be sentenced to a special type of probation. The only condition? He can't look into a mirror the rest of his life. Problem solved.

anyone have a picture of sour grapes?

I am a diehard Giant fan who used to love Tiki Barber and now detest him. I thought Eli summed it up the best, when he questioned what kind of leader was Barber. How could you be a leader when you rip the head coach through the media and then say that you are going to retire in like week 5 of the season. What kind of messages are you sending to your team. I do not like Coughlin at all, but before Coughlin came aboard Tiki put the ball on the ground constantly. Coughlin made him an MVP caliber type back. I do not know where he gets that 10 million dollar figure either. If he does stay retired I wish he would just talk about the Giants objectively. Don't rip the organization that drafted you and help you progress into a star. Try to have some class. Would I take him back, of course! But he must apoligize to the people and the giants organization for being the pompus a-hole that he has all of a sudden turned into!

All Tiki cares about is Tiki; he was a good running back, not great and he did a great diservice to the team last year with his retirement talk half way into the season. Keep the mic and spend time on five hours worth of the TODAY show on NBC each day, Tiki...you weren't that good.

I think you guys are missing the point. He is selling a book. He is getting tens of millions of dollars in free publicity. He is a smart guy. You dont really think that these guys really all love each other do you? At the pro level, it is ALL about the money. Maybe we cant understand it but the players do.

The guy is stating his (maybe) honest opinion ( a rare thing in sports nowdays) and he gets killed for it? Its not like he left a frat or social club. If he had slowed down a bit the Giants would not of hesitated to cut him.

What he said about Eli is what most of the league is probably thinking and saying he did not like Tom Coughlin is not exactly earthshattering news. TC is not a very well liked guy and it wasn't that long ago that the Giants almost had a mutiny because of him. (BTW- Coughlin's brother is a harness horse trainer)

But it is not easy hitting a curve ball. Ask MJ

Scuds none of this outrage ever happened while Mr Mara was alive. Tiki wouldn't dare open his mouth and insult one of the legends of the NFL. Remember it was Mr Mara and some of the other big market owners who pushed for revenue sharing on the tv deals and that is what has made the nfl waht it is today. After he died Tiki went on a self crusade to oust Mr Mara's hand picked guy - Tom Coughlin - Tom was hired because of the BC connection - the Mara's are big aulmnae up there and they know Tom from there and from his days with Parcells. I agree that Coughlin should go , he is not the type of coach you win a super bowl with , the sideline antics are just too much. Someone in the Giants organzation needs to stand up and tell Tiki to stick it where the sun don't shine. He has embarssed himself and he is embarrsing the giant oraganization and the former owner, there is no need for this - YOU ARE RETIRED TIKI - comment on all 28 teams please!

Well,my friend says Tiki is a "House Negro" doing "House Negro" things(like this backstabbing etc.) Well,he used slightly different words.I just think it's odd the guy seemed to respect Coughlin a couple years ago,and then turns on him. No,Canon(Simon) we don't understand somebody doing this just to sell books. You're the expert on selling, though. So,maybe you're right.

Hello racist police you have a customer!!!

You act like these guys are blood brothers or something. They play and coach on a professional football team for god sakes. The majority of them didn't chose to be on the team. It's not like choosing a college or country club. They get paid to play which doesn't mean they are all buddies or friends. What do you mean backstabbing? He seems to be very upfront with his comments. He seemed to respect his coach? Shocking that he would do that publically. It is not like this guy is "outing" a gay guy or telling some inside secrets. He says that Coughlin made football not fun and that is the reason that he retired early. What is the big deal about that? Listen to Coughlin for about 2 minutes and you can see that he does not seem to be a barrel of laughs. I think if he had said it last year while he was still playing it would have been much worse. He is retired. He is not a member of the team anymore. He has a job in the media. I like the fact that he seems to not be afraid to say what he thinks. I never knew that he was bound for life by NY Giant nation to some secret code of honor.

The Giants suck anyway.

and Scuds since you like to take shots at me.....

The Dodgers suck too!!!!!!! Have fun leaving in the 7th inning after puking up the all you can eat bleacher food!

BTW- Tommy Lasorda is gay
