I just hope somebody good buys him. Who knows who'll pony up the cash at auction. He might end up being a neighbor of someone like Volponi, Strike the Gold, Souvenir Copy or Alysheba. He's a hard knocking lil guy with some talent and some class. He should've had a better career than he did but that's water under the bridge now--I'd like it if he gets a decent chance in the states.

Okay so let's do this: where will he go and how much could he stand for if you had to predict?

i believe he did not. if you ranked all the horses that ended their careers with three victories by earnings, he would have to be at or near the top.

miraja2 08-12-2007 08:09 AM

Much like Giacomo, this horse would have been long forgotten if Jeremy Rose had figured out how to ride Afleet Alex sooner. Once Rose let Afleet Alex lope along down the backstretch (Preakness, Belmont) and make a big run around the far turn and into the stretch, he was a tough racehorse.
Unfortunately it seemed to take Rose awhile to figure that out and so, we have "G1 winners" from that crop like Wilko and Giacomo.

tanner12oz 08-12-2007 08:34 AM

how much money you think he burned?

ALostTexan 08-12-2007 11:12 AM

For me, plenty...

Thunder Gulch 08-12-2007 12:48 PM

Everyone quit being so hard on lil' Wilko. He wasn't very big or fast, but he ran his heart out when he was younger.

Danzig 08-12-2007 01:58 PM

29 starts, only three wins, but 16 times he was on the board. champ 2 yo, and winner of the bcj. by a top sire in awesome again.

wonder who will buy him in the fall....stud fee is tricky--but anyone looking for precocity would look hard at him. at least 10-15k i would think.

cakes44 08-13-2007 11:16 AM

Declan's Moon was the champ 2-year-old that year.

pointman 08-13-2007 11:58 AM

One of the most overrated horses of this era.

I disagree. For a horse to be overrated doesn't somebody have to rate the horse highly?
He certainly wasn't very good, but I think everybody knew that. Therefore, I wouldn't call him overrated.

yes you're right, he wasn't overrated. what he was was an over earner. who earned more money with less talent?

pointman 08-13-2007 01:02 PM

The horse won one big race and was lucky at that. He was consistently run in Grade I's that he did not belong in and people kept betting him. Maybe overrated is the wrong word, but I see nothing special about this horse and certainly would not breed to him. I made good money betting against him. He is really not worth talking much about as he was not really anything more than most horses that race every day. So you can call it what you want.

Almutawakel was 0-for-10 in the USA, but made over $3.6 million thanks to a huge upset win in the Dubai World Cup. Though, surely he had to have more talent than Wilko.

This had to be mighty sad news to Mortimer.
