Free Money

For whatever reason there is a lack of talent in top class horses in socal. Purses are great but I suspect the death of many prominent horse owners the past decade and the general anti business cliamate that exists in socal have just left the cubbard bare.

The purses and stake races though are higher then ever. How come more horses and barns are not shipping out for the money. Precious Kitten, a decent mare but not super just collected a free 200k by beating the likes of Memorette and Dancing Eddie.

If I had serious cash I would be buying east coast and euro stock like crazy and sending it west for the money.

You are right about the big owners passing and the same is true in the East. The sport needs new blood. They call it the Sport of King and I guess there is only so many Kings.

I dont know, see lots of high priced well bred two year olds racing at saratoga, they cant even get more then one a week at del mar.

lets see allen paulson, tbred corp, bob lewis, john mabee...thats alot of stock to lose in a decade.

Rutheriane ships and wins 240k, more easy cash.

maybe Student Council, who was bought privately gets the big cash tomorrow? That the type of horse who I was thinking of, though on the fringes of being good enough.

deltagulf 08-18-2007 08:44 PM

if it was free money then more people would ship to socal.

clement and pletcher have made it look routine this year.

Pletcher wins at socal, new york, florida, ohio, canad etc. If he had a mule in my local county fair, i would bet him to win. He just has great stock.

He never gets beyers higher than in the high 90s. I'd be shocked if he won :)

Maybe the Beyers are exaggerated in Cali. Look at all the west coast horses that flop everywhere else (Lava Man)

Bobby Fischer 08-19-2007 09:11 AM

Right now you have to bring a turf/AWT horse out west to run on the main track. A speedy dirt horse isn't going to get it done. It's a little bit tricky for these owners and trainers right now to know the right kind of animal to bring over. Some of these guys who run in the bigger races at Keeneland and Arlington Park would be moving up in winnings in California.

Motion has a horse called Better Than Bonds. He is mediocre over here(better on poly but has to follow Motion to Delaware Park) but I think he could be a Ball Four type of horse on the west coast with a little freshening and a front running jockey like Talamo or Migliore

You see horse like Sinister Minister and Maimonides going out of Ca. to find a dirt track.

EDIT- Dominican would have a chance to keep earning. The easiest 3yo to think of.

I agree its down, certainly not devoid of talent and not to the extreme you take everything.

nice west coast filly shipped and won the other day at your mighty saratoga, and maimonades will be the chalk in the kings bishop, hardly like there is nothing coming from out west.

There are only so many kings, but there's one king that seems to buying everything. Or at least a family full of sheiks...
