Claiming Crown

Maker wins with Bargain with the Devil, One Eyed Joker, Miami Sunrise on the same card. All cast offs or throw outs, he also runs a 3rd with Korbyn Gold on the same card. 3 of the 4 winners paid over 13.00, heck of a day for him.

Also for...

Jockey Miguel Mena, proving his success at Turfway was no fluke, the kid can ride.

The Bid 08-04-2007 07:56 PM

The ride the kid gave One Eyed Joker was tragic, how that horse won I have no idea.

I have to disagree with you on Mena, he continues to put horses in bad spots, he was simply on the best horses today

mclem10011 08-04-2007 07:59 PM

Fair enough....

He wins alot of races, because he does get live mounts I can agree with you there Bid.

why do they run this right now when it competes with too many other big events?

He ran AP the last couple years and whatever he was on was a very viable candidate for the first horse I TOSSED. He rode like crap at AP.

i think he mainly benefits from getting live mounts. he gave me some rides at TP last winter that i'll never forgive him for. bad judgement and showboating cost me money.

Coach Pants 08-04-2007 09:02 PM

He posted bail for me in the 11th. I owe the little guy.

Damn I was 111 under on the attendance. Didn't look like a big crowd. The handle is solid...Geary brought in a whale or two I believe.

Canterbury gets at least 10,000 for the event every year.

I hope it comes back where it belongs. It wasn't bad at Ellis, but it needs to come back here.

BTW, what about the 49-1 winner for Canterbury's own Paul Nolan?

PeteMugg 08-05-2007 08:12 AM

Maybe a larger crowd and on track handle at Canterbury, but overall handle was up 800k for the previous Claiming Crown record.

Congrats to Mike, a good trainer and a good guy. The claiming crown however needs to do something different because the races this year were softer than usual and with the dramatic increase in purses at some tracks, the lower level claiming crown races have really lost their luster.

I like the format of the CC, I think they did a good job this year. If they didnt run up against Saratoga on a Saturday it would really help them out.

I thought the races were more interesting this year. And 50k, 75k 100k and 150k races for starters? What else could they do? Maybe they didn't get a former G3 winner as in prior years but the fields were very full and Ellis handled nearly twice what they did the previous Saturday. I think most people would say they did a great job.
