Stifle Condition in Horse
As a recently new owner of horses this year, one of my 2YO fillies had a stifle condition earlier this Spring. The rear hind leg was not functioning properly.
Anyway, the horse was blistered (a shot given to her) and she responded to that treatment almost immediately and was back to normal. The condition then reappeared once again a few weeks later. This filly has grown much more than was expected and one theory is that she has simply grown up too fast and thus the reason for her right hind leg and her stifle condition. It has been decided to turn her out until next Spring and try to get her to the races as a 3YO. Anyway, it is obviously not uncommon for horses to get to the races until their 3YO year. I was wondering if there is anyone else out there who has been associated with horses that has had this experience. Much appreciated... PSH |
Yeah, a stifle injury is like you straining your knee (to make an anology)...obviously, horses get all of their push from their rear legs so any muscle/ligament ailments would severely reflect in the horse's ability to perform...I've seen it happen before and it usually requires significant care and time....if it is reoccuring then it would seem to me as though there are imperfections in the horse's stride that put more stress on that particular leg and area of that leg...How is the horse's conformation?..good luck with it...

Thanks Joel
Confirmation is quite good.
A stifle condition in a young horse is fairly common as i am told. The fact that this particular 2YO filly had it come back is not all that common but still is observed in some youngsters. The fact that this filly has been growing and growing makes our assumption that she just needs to be turned out until her growth has been completed... Thanks, PSH |
