7/4: Wadsworth Mem. to Funny Cide

I was just wondering...does anybody recognize these horses?? Are they any good? I don't think my area gets Finger Lakes so I won't be looking at the PPs.

Funny Cide is in deep water, may have to bet this one.

miraja2 07-01-2007 06:00 PM

Johnie Bye Night is a fairly decent Finger Lakes horse who won a few stakes races there last year. In fact, I think he may be the defending champ in this race.
I don't know what he has done this year.

sumitas 07-01-2007 10:15 PM

I think Johnie Bye Night is having a good year. Tommasi is not too bad. the weights are all over the place. 103# for Out By Africa ?

Hickory Hill Hoff 07-01-2007 10:17 PM

Rises the Phoenix, I believed romped in his debut there a few week's back...
Stefano would be proud of this runner!

A sad, sad day for Funny Cide.

letswastemoney 07-01-2007 11:30 PM

As long as he wins, it won't be sad :)

I don't care if he wins by 30, the fact that he had to ship to FINGER LAKES to get a win is pitiful.

ALostTexan 07-02-2007 01:01 AM

I don't know that he "had to ship to Finger Lakes to get a win". I honestly believe that Belmont would write a race for him to be competitive.

Maybe it is a idealitic view, but perhaps this is truely a way to give back to the racing world, letting the fans of Finger Lakes, who rarely get to see an Ohio Derby-caliber horse much less a Kentucky Derby winner. I wish that there were more geldings winning huge races and then get to see them race deep into their careers at smaller tracks like FLakes.

It will definately be a circus scene up there on Wed, but these are the things that the sport needs...

I think it's a desperate stable's search for a win disguised as a charitable donation to the more humble sector of the racing world.

What race could Belmont write for him that would guarantee a win? The Funny Cide Stakes, restricted to only horses named Funny Cide? He's out of allowance conditions, he's been beaten up by NY-breds over and over again and he obviously can't hack it in graded stakes company. What other choices does he have?

and of course the possibility exists that he might not win, even if he's supposed to...

Zaf 07-02-2007 06:59 AM

Shipping to FL and .........

Alan Garcia picks up the mount, things can only go up from here.

100K is not pitiful. The horse wants to run, just like Evening Attire. What do you do with a horse that wants to run, let it sit in the stall, and cry

Yeah, they're just doing this because "the horse wants to run." Easy to say when he's a gelding.

I don't care what the purse is, when a former Kentucky Derby winner can't win anywhere better than Finger Lakes, it's pitiful.

Why?, he ran in 100k optional claimers. FL will get a 6,000 plus attendance to see a Derby and Preakness winner. People still want to see the horse run. If he does well, they will write a race for him at the Spa too. Will that be sad also??

sumitas 07-02-2007 11:16 AM

What is so sad about FC running in a $100k stakes @ FL ? I don't get it.

Optional claimers at 100K, which he already won one.

SuffolkGirl 07-02-2007 01:43 PM

It could be much more pitiful

Things could be much worse - he could end up like Ferdinand and be sent to slaughter for fine dining in some foreign country. Let the horse run, let the people get a chance to see a Kentucky Derby winner, albeit a mere shadow of himself. and hope the owners make appropriate decisions with the horse so he can live a happy and productive life in whatever capacity chosen.

It's ****ing FINGER LAKES! Look at the horses he's facing! How difficult is it to understand why that's gross for a Kentucky Derby winner?
