Stevie Wonderboy Retired; Will Stand at Airdrie
by Claire Novak

Juvenile Champion Stevie Wonderboy, winner of the 2005 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (gr. I), has been retired from racing and will stand at Brereton and Elizabeth Jones’ Airdrie Stud in Midway, KY, Airdrie announced June 28.

“We couldn't be more excited to be bringing Stevie Wonderboy into the stallion barn,” said Bret Jones of Airdrie. “He did exactly what a champion is supposed to do: beat the best on both sides of the country. I really believe the juvenile field he beat, with Henny Hughes and First Samurai, was as strong as any in recent memory, and he was really getting away from them at the end. It's just a shame we never got to see him in the classics. As brilliant as he was at two, he was absolutely tailor-made for the Triple Crown trail.”

Raced in the silks of entertainment legend Merv Griffin and campaigned by trainer Doug O’Neill, Stevie Wonderboy took the 2005 Eclipse Award for Champion 2-year-old colt following his victory in the Juvenile, which came on the heels of a five-length triumph in the Del Mar Futurity (gr. II). By A.P. Indy’s grade I-winning son Stephen Got Even, Stevie Wonderboy is out of the Summer Squall mare Heat Lightening.

“We've had a wonderful relationship with Mr. Griffin for a long time, and we feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to stand his champion," said Jones.

A stud fee for Stevie Wonderboy has not yet been set.
