I've just been a victim of online fraud and theft

I check my bank account every Monday morning to make sure everything is on the up and up with pending charges and the like, and noticed that ALOT of money was missing. Turns out someone got a hold of my card number and went wild, charging everything from online games, music, porn, paypal.
I've called the bank and they were no help, I need some advice. Thanks

How much money do you have left?

cancel the card for one...then call the bank and start yelling.
that happened to me a couple of years ago it's the worst.

how did that go for you, was the process long and drawn out before you got anything refunded?

well, when it happened to me the fraud department caught it before I did...but it took about 2 weeks before I got my $$ back, and it was a total pain in the ass.

You need to contact your Bank AND the Federal Trade Commission.

http://www.ftc.gov/

It wouldn't hurt to contact the 3 credit bureaus either to report suspicious activity and set up a fraud alert to be safe:

Equifax:

Experian:

TransUnion:

you are entitled to a free credit report once a year--i encourage everyone to look theirs up, from all three agencies. i do it every year when i file my taxes, seemed a good way to remember.
also, be very careful about websites you use to shop and NEVER give out personal info when you receive an email requesting those things. very often it's a fake email (from paypal or ebay for example)--NEVER use links to go to sites from those emails. also, most reputable companies (such as those two) will not ever send an email requesting info. we've gotten fake emails before from 'ebay' and sent the email on to their fraud dept.
also, legit co's will send to your real name, not a blanket email to 'customer'.

I had weekends like that in my youth.
Good luck trying to get refunded for it.

what also is mysterious is that a bulk of charges came from paypal, yet I call paypal and they have no record of any charges using my bank account, yet my bank says they come from paypal.

This is sounding more like an inside bankjob.

Find out which bank employee has the first name "Pal".

Mortimer 06-25-2007 11:36 AM

Or last name.

I sure hope he's not making it up. If he is, that's a pretty scumbag thing to do. Karma gets you every time, though.

So was it all out of your checking account? The bank should give you an immediate temporary credit and then go through the chargeback/fraud process. The good news is based on what was purchased, I doubt if it was anything other than a hacker going joy riding so to speak. I have had it happen to me as well, but it was caught by my banks firewalls and it actually turned out to be someone within the bank.

heres an update ive been on the phone all morning between bank of america and paypal, ive gotten back half of my money back. They released the pendnig funds back into my account and paypal was ok with it, it also turns out this guy has been nickel and diming my account for over a month to well over 890 dollars without me knowing about it. The customer service people so far have been great vs what I had to deal with this morning, the new batch of people have been very nice, plesant, and accomodating. 90% of the charges have been for online video games, so hopefully we can track the bastard who did this. I am relieved now more than anything, still a few transactions left to clear up and it looks like its gonna turn out ok. Thanks for the responses
