Hialeah on List of Endangered Historic Places

I'm sure this has been discussed on the board recently, but I haven't seen it... thought this was good news. (from the Bloodhorse)

Hialeah on List of Endangered Historic Places

The National Trust for Historic Preservation has put Florida's Hialeah Park racecourse on its list of the country's most endangered historic places.

Hialeah Park is fourth on the list of 11 historic sites in danger of being lost to development.

Getting on the list doesn't ensure that the sites will be preserved, but it brings national attention to local preservation efforts.

Hialeah Park first opened in 1925. Seabiscuit, Citation, and Seattle Slew were among the top horses stabled there over the decades. Winston Churchill, Harry Truman, and John F- Kennedy were some of the dignitaries who watched the races at the 220-acre park.

The Legislature revoked its racing license in 2001. The park's owner closed the park in 2005 and filed an application to develop 3,700 housing units and shops on the site.

I imagine that there are those on this site who have visited Hialeah when it was active.

And of course, the list of all-time greats who won there is impressive.

I was lucky enough to visit Hialeah and IMO it was the most beautiful track I've seen (so far.) I haven't had the privilege of seeing very many tracks, though, so I could be biased.

Last I read they are planning to build 4,000 condos on the site.

And if the problems in Hialeah continue, it will be an interesting place to live.

Yeah, that would be pretty interesting to say the least. Kinda weird that they're burrowing. I didn't realize that iguanas did that.

I too think it is the most beautiful track. What the F do we need more housing in So. FL for? There is enough. Houses aren't selling as it is. Like we need more friggen condos. Not like that neighborhood is the best of areas to live in.

That track was beautiful. They should redo it and start up again. If I could only hit the lottery for a HUGE pot.

why not renovate and hold an occassional breeders cup here. it would be the perfect venue.

Me too, and I've seen quite a few- Hialeah is #2 behind Saratoga only for me.

I loved that place.

The demise of Hialeah is one of the saddest chapters in racing in recent years. However the greed of the madman that owns the lease pretty much assured it fate. As for housing there, I hope they are offering bulletproof windows and kevlar vests as incentives to buy.

How would you know? When was the last time you were there?

Last time I checked, Hialeah was in the hood.

You spend a lot of time in Hialeah?

Crime there is at the nat'l average. I wonder where, oh say, Louisville Kentucky rates? All I know is you cannot build a new 4 br home there for under $450k. Blanket statements like the one made above are just dumb.

Listen genius I was stabled there 4 years ago when one of the hotwalkers in the barn next to us was gunned down at the stable gate. I'm sure that I have spent much more time in that neighborhood than you have. I would love to drop you off there one night with your crime rate data and see how you fare.

OK Einstein.

I suppose noone ever got killed at another racetrack? Wait it happened at Arlington a few years ago. Never mind.

Thanks for the ride offer. I'll pass. I'm already there 3-4 times a month. I can find my way around.

Louisville? Probably a higher crime rate, but it depends on the area.

BTW, you can't buy a 2 bedroom home in the GHETTO here in Orlando for under 180k. Home prices are expensive in Florida, that's all there is to it.
