Swept Overboard ran a 122?

Damn....that was my last winner I bet in the race. 11-1. I think that was Jorge Chavez's last win in a big race.

Yes....and it wasn't the only time in his career he ran a 122 Beyer.

I bet him at 11/1 that day as well.

He was unarguably best when 4th, beaten just one length, in the '01 Breeders Cup Sprint at Belmont. Basically, the three speeds (Squirtle Squirt, Xtra Heat, and Caller One) raced in the top three positions throughout the race....while Swept Overboard closed from 2nd to last, and up the deeper rail path.

Both times Swept Overboard ran a 122 Beyer in his career---he exited a six furlong loss at Bay Meadows in his previous start.

It probably was Chavez's last big, big one. The only other one I can remember was King's Drama in the 2005 Sword Dancer. My how fast his career went down the tubes.

One can only wonder how crushed Exciting Story's detractors are today.

I used to really like the guy. Was a helluva jockey before he got hurt. Ever since then he lost his aggressiveness. Like you said he has kinda gone down the tubes. Solis seems to be going through the same thing.

Very true.

The late great Exciting Story.

I bet him in the Met.

I also bet Squirtle in the BC Sprint, and take exception to you saying he wasn't best that day.

I don't remember who I bet in that BC Sprint---I want to say maybe Left Bank---but all I know for sure is that they didn't win.

Swept Overboard obviously ran better than the winner in the Sprint!

I was at the Breeders' Cup that year, and I recall that speed horses were faring poorly. Up comes the BC Sprint, and people around me expected the speed to collapse. Speed is very good in 6F Belmont races, and the speed types ran 1-2-3. Swept Overboard ran a terrific race that day, along with the dueling pacesetters.

Left Bank won the Whitney the following year and finished fifth in the 2001 BC Sprint. The 2001 BC Sprint is probably special to Bobby Frankel, as it ended his 0-fer schneid.

Like the previous poster said--he wasn't dead by then...and ran 5th in the race.

It was three Pletcher horses who ran within a span of about a week at Saratoga in 2002.

Warners died right after his big figure allowance win, Freedom's Daughter died right after her spectacularly game Schuylerville win, and Left Bank got sick after his 119 Beyer Whitney win over Street Cry....and died later that year.

Danzig 05-29-2007 04:42 PM

i remember warners now....and left bank--hated losing him, just when he was really starting to turn it on.

Please. Xtra Heat deserved to win that Sprint. And that was a damned good field...

The Indomitable DrugS 05-29-2007 09:21 PM

I was a rabid Xtra Heat fan from the midway point of her 3-year-old season on---and even entertained the idea of betting her in that race--but the presence of Caller One and Squirtle Squirt and the likely pace battle that never happened kept me from it.

I steadfastly maintain that Swept Overboard was clearly the best that day.

JJP 05-29-2007 09:46 PM

The field this year was very underwhelming. Not surprised at all about the 107.

I see you went from Billick in your avatar to Ozzy. They had an interesting interview w/Ozzy on sportsradio in Chicago last week. Ozzy called up and started swearing like he was Ozzy Osbourne, not Guillen. And Mike North, absolutely let him have it and gave him a great ass-kicking on the air. The incident was enough to get North an audition for Don Imus' job at WFAN.

philcski 05-29-2007 09:58 PM

I got a 123.8 on my figs for this race, which equals a 112 Beyer (and considering the 2nd and 4th place finishers came out of the Westchester and ran virtually the same race, and got the same exact number for Political Force, fits well). I'd like to know why they came up with a 107; I'd guess it's because the the 6th race was only 5 lengths slower, but in that race the very consistent Organizer got his seemingly standard 115 (a 98 Beyer) and City Attraction basically paired his last race (a 117, equating to a 101 Beyer and a 118 this time.) Perhaps the 6th race was just fast for the level... they did come home awfully quick in that race after a very moderate pace.

Not the fastest Met Mile ever but not a terrible G1 either.
