Henny Hughes - Opinion on my opinion?

Does anyone else think this is an insane spot to be going in? Personally, off the layoff he is taking and all the shipping he has done, and to throw him in a race like this is going to be real hard on him.....

McLaughlin told me the night of Belmont that HH was doing great.. He's stalled 2 down from Jazil. Looked very healthy. Seemed nice too, but all of Kieran's horses are kind. He wouldn't be there if he wasn't ready. McL is top notch off the break.

zippyneedsawin 06-28-2006 10:48 PM

It certainly turned into a tough spot with the field that's entered. Sounds like he'll be ready, but who knows what kind he is as a 3 year old?

randallscott35 06-28-2006 10:49 PM

Henny will most likely win that race.

blackthroatedwind 06-28-2006 10:51 PM

Every horse has to start somewhere and losing means nothing.

Having said that....depending on who actually shows up you are certainly supposed to bet against Henny Hughes.

Thanks but I was suggesting that these races always seem to have scratches.

zippyneedsawin 06-28-2006 11:25 PM

ahh... gotcha. Yeah, a horse like Keyed Entry is a good candidate for that.

I don't think HH has done any travelling lately. I think he has been in the states for the last 4 months or so. That race looks like a very reasobale spot to bring him back in. I would think that he would go off at low odds and he should have a great chance to win if he's doing well.

irishtrekker 06-29-2006 05:56 AM

I can't really see anyone beating HH here unless he has an unusually bad day, although anyone know much about Changing Weather? Looking at his weight for the race, I assume he's considered a top entry?

paisjpq 06-29-2006 06:09 AM

Henny hughes is a born runner--he's been that way since the day he hit the ground. He looked ready to race at two months old! He is as game as they come and even if he's not 100% percent fit he's gonna fight hard. I think he wins this one.
If I had a nickel for every time he knocked someone flat or took off with the person trying to lead him as a baby i would be very comfortable...

I don't think it is "an insane spot to be going in." I mean, he has to start somewhere and a G3 sprint for 3yo seems like as good as spot as any. He certainly has a chance to win.

That being said, for me he is a definite "bet-against" in this race. Off of a layoff this long we can't be sure that he will be back to his 2yo form in his first start, and for that matter we can't be sure that he will EVER return to form. I have not looked at the pp yet, but I suspect there will be a good price to bet in this race.
For some reason I just have a feeling that HH is going to place in this spot. Not sure why (like I said I have not even looked at the pp) but looking at the field I just have that gut feeling that HH is running second.

Scav 06-29-2006 08:41 AM

the thing is that I agree with Steve and I play alot of MCL's horses off the layoff, he does really good with those types. I am guessing that he didn't want to see all the speed that is in the race or the rail for that matter....

zippyneedsawin 06-29-2006 09:39 AM

I'm still wondering if Keyed Entry has fully recovered from his derby run. I think Fabulous Strike is dangerous in this spot. His race on Belmont Day (versus Too Much Bling and Songster) was pretty good.

Cunningham Racing 06-29-2006 11:25 AM

I'm a fan of this horse's ability and there have probably been fewer people tracking his progress after his huge BC Juvy...we all know that he is a one-turn specialist and his future is in sprinting...he has brillaint speed and a very efficient stride...I really like this colt and have said from months back that I'm reserving judgement on who I'm following for the BC Sprint until I see him run...I think he is that good and I really think a 3-year-old will win the BC Sprint this year because it is a very good group...

...Funny thing is that I like Keyed Entry too, but I think Keyed Entry will probably be more effective at 7 furlongs to a mile than 6 furlongs - thus, I like Henny Hughes a tad bit better to follow for the BC Sprint...I do believe these two are both better sprinters than Songster and Too Much Bling though, as for 3-year-olds go....just my opinion...Bordonaro and LITF are still the #1 seeds in the sprint division until we see a great effort by Henny Hughes, Keyed Entry, Too Much Bling or Songster....all 3 of these should meet in the King's Bishop in what will be one helluva race and the winner of that race is probably the best sprinter in North America IMO..

dr. fager 06-29-2006 11:33 AM

Bordonero has really impressed me, I hear the Bing Crosby is next up....any buzz on LITF being there too?

Flaxen Mane 06-29-2006 11:44 AM

It's looks as good a spot as any to me. They said he probably won't be at his best in his first back, and lately allowances have been coming up just as strong as the stakes, so why not make a stab at some real money? He's a nice colt, and he's been working well, I think this is within his scope, even if he does need more seasoning.

As a sidenote, I'm VERY curious to see how Keyed Entry will do. I've been hoping to see him turn up in a sprint, he could be a good one!

Agreed re: Keyed Entry...his Hutcheson performance may be the single best race run this year...certainly is the best around one turn. Just gonna be interesting to see if the Derby thrashing threw him for a loop...

I'm curious about that Derby thing too, hopefully that time off will help him out. He seems to be a pretty classy colt, so hopefully that big loss wasn't enough to break him.
