street sense could have gotten a pin in his hoof before the belmont. or his jock might have made a premature move. doubt he could have replicated bid's triple crown win.

Calvin rode a great race in the Derby---no one could argue against that. Who's to say Day doesn't fearlessly skate up the rail?

He also gave his horse a pretty good trip today...he did nothing wrong.

Day couldn't win the first two legs on Easy Goer....who's to say he'd have won them both with SS?

I notice that you list Java Gold as one of the best horses since 1986. I'm not sure if I agree with that, but at any rate, Java Gold was the best of a very strong 1987 3yo class.

That was quite a ride by Pat Day aboard him in the 1987 JC Gold Cup. Letting Creme Fraiche pull a wire job. That was almost as bad as his rides aboard Sky Classic in the BC Turf and Arlington Million.

While I was extremely disappointed in that JCGC loss, it wasn't as bad as it seemed. I wish Day had ridden the race different but losing to Creme Fraiche wasn't a disgrace. Creme Fraiche was a seven-time grade one winner in his career and obviously excelled running in 12f dirt races, being a Belmont Stakes winner in addition to winning back to back runnings of the JCGC.

And Again

no denying what day accomplished during his career but as others have noted there were some awful rides near the end. his ride on perfect drift in the HGC foolishly going outside to chase a pace on perfect drift when he coulda just sat on the rail behind 2 dueling horses, end result greta wins the race on freefour. i also thought his ride in the belmont on TMW was awful getting caught wide in the compac field, believe it woulda been a much closer finish if not different result

Creme Fraiche was very nice closer who you didn't expect to see on the lead in a dirt race. I remember betting him in the Louisiana Derby and watching his furious rally just fall short to Violado. In the Jersey Derby, when Spend a Buck was poised to win that huge bonus, Creme Fraiche must have put some serious fear in the connections of Spend a Bunk with that big move along the rail in the stretch.
