Put down the pipe John Pricci

Here are a few quotes from JP's latest bit of work.

"Street Sense, a throwback racehorse, one that never runs a bad race, that comes from behind no matter what and let the pace be damned. No comparisons quite yet, but when he starts to crank that kick he comes on like Kelso and comes on like Forego and comes on like John Henry. He just doesn’t stop coming."

Actually, he's shown at least mild signs of "hang" through the final 1/16th in every career start with the exception of the BC Juvie. And....as for the inclusion of late developing legends like Kelso, Forego, and John Henry...I'm not Tapout---so I know he only envoked those names to compare late runs---but I just think it's pretty amusing.

In a television interview on the Capital OTB Television Network, Borel promised after the Blue Grass that Street Sense would be 20 lengths better in the Derby. When given a chance to recant, he refused.

According to Equiform performance figures, the improvement from the Blue Grass to the Derby was 14.84 lengths, 1 Equiform point equaling 2.375 lengths when comparing 9-furlong races to 10. So Borel was close enough. The final figure also represented a lifetime best effort.

Somehow....he just topped comparing his finishing ability to Kelso, Forego, and John Henry's.

I got to listen to Pricci on Inside Racing growing up---and I liked him, I just hope he hasn't lost his sanity.

By definition...he was the fastest horse in the race.

I used to really enjoy Pricci on Thoroughbred Action and Inside Racing...

He seemed to change when he left Newsday...

John took the buyout in 94 or 95.

I just found a tape of some old Inside Racing shows with him and Harvey from Belmont's fall meet in '95.

He didn't leave the track after leaving Newday.

I have actually known Pricci since 1976. He was very nice to me when I was an obnoxious little kid.

In a former life as a young reporter covering each racing day at the venerable Spa for an upstate NY fishwrap back in the late '80s Mr Pricci was very approachable, always willing to impart his knowledge and reporting expertise, unlike some others in the press box back then who wouldn't give me the time of the day. Have always enjoyed his work on the Sport of Kings. I find him as refreshing and insightful now as I ever have.

Up until his latest piece I hope.
