Carl and Asmussen

Well I was on the backside this morning and Carl and Asmussen both said that SS and Curlin are not 100% definate for the Preakness. Carl said that they horse will let him know if he is ready to go or not. Steve said he wants to wait to see what Curlin looks like next week. This type of game drives me crazy with trainers. I just wish they would say they they are running and to get ready for it.

I'm pretty sure that Street Sense will be there. Just a hunch.

When was the last time a Derby winner didn't try the Preakness?

The Indomitable DrugS 05-10-2007 05:26 PM

Grindstone

whodey17 05-10-2007 05:31 PM

hasnt there only been like 3 or 4 times the KY Derby lost in the Preakness in the past 20 years?

The Indomitable DrugS 05-10-2007 05:35 PM

No.

There have been 8 Derby winners repeat in the Preakness over the last 20 years.

Curlin= GO

Well Curlin is a go for the Preakness

Now will he be 2nd or 3rd choice behind SS and who will get the mount?

As we know that world famous jock that had him for the derby, is too good for this crappy horse:D

The Indomitable DrugS 05-10-2007 05:42 PM

He will very likely be edged out of 2nd choice by Hard Spun in the betting. RA will retain the mount.

I answered a question that was asked.....I don't see how that has anything to do with trying to be clever.

Grindstone missed the race with an injury if memory serves me right, he never ran again.

Grindstone actually won the Derby and was found to have a slab fracture the next morning. He never went to the track again.

I think the answer u are looking for is Spend a Buck in 1985. He instead ran in the Jersey Derby, in pursuit of a $2.6 million payday from a bonus that came with winning the Jersey Derby, the Kentucky Derby, and two other NJ races, the Garden State Stakes and the Cherry Hill Mile.

Travis Stone 05-10-2007 08:07 PM

Grindstone was retired before he could attempt the Preakness... he's the last one.

The Indomitable DrugS 05-10-2007 08:11 PM

They are assuming he asked the question wanting to know when the last Derby winner skipped the race while sound and healthy.

It was six days later according to Avalyn Hunter. I believe it was a bone chip but not sure.

DrugS I would answer 1982. Gato Del Sol!

"Gato won the Derby in 1982, paying box cars, and beat a horse called Laser Light, who I thought could not lose. I bet my conviction, yet making $166 dollars a week, gross, working six days a week at Claiborne farm, I was not exactly well heeled.

Since I was going to the Derby, the farm workers gave me money to bet, and as a group, strongly supported Gato Del Sol. He was a plodder of modest ability, owned by Arthur Hancock, who lost the keys to Claiborne, to his brother Seth, when their father passed away. Arthur, who then and now, operates Stone farm, was better liked and had told many he would win.

The Thursday before the Derby, Eddie Maple the regular rider of Laser Light came out to look at some of his mares, who were boarded at Claiborne. John Sosby, the farm manager allowed me some questions. Eddie assured me, quite believably, that "he would be on the board somewhere".

I bet both horses across the board, repeatedly, and they ran one, two at box cars! When I got to the Claiborne foaling barn about 2 am, I had money literally falling out of my pockets.

The following Monday Arthur said they were skipping the Preakness and the media treated him like dirt. It was the right move for the horse. BBB

Let's just say Dr. Harthill did some of his best work on Grindstone in the 3 days prior to the Derby, and it definately was a slab fracture...
