Derby Jokes on Tonight Show

We got three jokes about the Derby (good natured ones too but a couple have already gone out of my head by the time I came to post this--they were amusing though). He congratulated Street Sense for winning the Derby and later on asked who'd watched it, both got applause so of course I was excited that we get pop culture mentions.

He joked that there was a surprise drug test of all 20 horses and asked if it was really a surprise given that they're horses. He mimed a horse smoking a joint and basically did a 'oh crap, hide the weed!' It was funnier than it sounds in print. I just like that we got publicly mentioned outside of ESPN.

(Make that 4 jokes...when he did Headlines the joke headline at the beginning of the segment said 'DC Madam says Derby winner was a client'..how very Catherine the Great).

I was really glad to hear that the ratings were up 12% from last year, too. And everyone at work today has been talking about it, and of course asking me about it. Glad to see that racing is getting a little attention...

Yeah when Merv was on the Late Late Show I was excited too. Might be the only time racing gets that kind of recognition. Positive stuff like this is so great to have. I'm used to being stomped on as a racing fan. They managed to finish the hockey game Saturday, I was stunned. If racing had any sense they'd yank Calvin or Carl to the Tonight Show. Maybe Mr. Tafel since those guys have to work. They have the American Idol castoffs on for pete's sake. The Indy 500 winner, the winning quarterback of the Super Bowl, etc. C'mon.

Dunno about anybody else but I was more than a little relieved when they cleared all 20 horses from the drug test. Even if Cowtown Cat had come up drugged or something and still finished dead last, all you'd hear is how a Derby horse had cheated and eventually it'd be twisted around so that people thought it was the Derby winner.
